4/5/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO provides advanced drying equipment and devices for water cleanup and drying in Lake Nona properties.
Water Cleanup Is a Product of Several Phases of Restoration in Lake Nona Properties
Cleaning up after water damages can require several steps and stages, beginning with our fast arrival for mitigation. Emergency services slow the progress of water damage and help prevent unnecessary harm to contents by allowing relocation and item-by-item cleanup and restoration. We are able to help 24/7 when disasters strike.
Surface Water Removal
Among the first steps of water cleanup for Lake Nona homes and businesses is eliminating surface water from the damaged areas. It is critical managing this pooling of water throughout the affected areas to reduce absorption and saturation into sensitive flooring materials like carpets, hardwood, and other similar materials used. We have multiple extractors to help in this effort, including vacuums and pumps.
Removing Moisture from Flooring Materials
It is important to identify water's impact on the flooring materials themselves. While we prioritize surface water removal, some penetration and absorption are likely. We must track the moisture migration in the house with sophisticated equipment to determine the ideal placement of our drying tools like mats and dehumidifiers. Some of the moisture tracking tools used include:
Was the Subflooring Damaged?
One of the questions SERVPRO must answer when managing water damage in a home or business is whether or not the subflooring was damaged during moisture migration. This subflooring often consists of an OSB board or plywood installation with joists, making it highly susceptible to water damage and deterioration. If water damage exists in these areas, we must act quickly to prevent tear-out and reconstruction when possible.
Because water damage can spread quickly in homes and businesses, SERVPRO of South Orange County works quickly to mitigate loss and protect what matters most to our customers. We are ready 24/7 to help when you call (407) 226-2621.
Four Common Mold Remediation Tactics for Orlando Homes
3/23/2022 (Permalink)
Mold remediation is best left to professionals like SERVPRO. We make your Orlando home clean and safe.
Professional Mold Remediation Options Work Best for Damaged Orlando Homes
Mold can be among the more challenging damaging effects that your property experiences in its lifetime. While not all homes and businesses develop mold threats, some areas are impacted regularly by moist conditions that facilitate infestation. Our experienced professionals can respond quickly with remediation strategies that overcome threatening conditions and prevent further damage with processes such as:
- Moisture removal
- Content cleaning
- Mold remediation
- Repairs
Surface Cleaning Treatments
Beginning mold remediation in Orlando homes focuses on what can be done quickly to overcome developing infestations and prevent irreparable harm to hosting materials. Ideally, surface cleaning is chosen first because it is less invasive and destructive, introducing powerful antimicrobial products to affected surfaces that kill mold organisms on contact.
Power / Hand-Sanding
Sanding is a measure of removing mold growth that only focuses on what is just beyond the surface layer. Using both hand sanding techniques and power tools, we can more effectively influence organisms trapped beyond the visible surface layer. This measurement is typically used with semi-porous materials like wood.
Media Blasting or Abrasive Cleaning
Among the more aggressive approaches that our professionals can take to remove active mold colonies from the property include media blasting. Along with efforts like sponge pressure cleaning, various media is blasted into the material substrate to eliminate mold organisms. The process could involve pressurized air or water, but water is more rarely used to prevent additional conditions for facilitating mold growth.
Controlled Demolition
While it is used as one of the final resorts for mold remediation, controlled demolition is a universally effective solution for removing active colonies. Discarding hosting elements is a certain method to eliminate mold concerns for the property. Because we have a contractor license, we can complete this demolition work as well as needed repairs and build back services required after mold exposure.
Mold is a threat to any home or business and should be resolved fast. Our SERVPRO of South Orange County team can help when you call (407) 226-2621.
Protecting Orlando Home Contents and Structure After Water Damage
3/15/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO mitigates water damage to laminated flooring with rapid extraction making our Orlando homeowner feel, "Like it never even happened."
Water Mitigation Protects Orlando Homes in Several Ways
Emergency services and mitigation are among the most critical first steps in protecting homes and businesses after water damage incidents. Whether it is a damaged appliance or a burst pipe, acting quickly to prevent the migration of water and its impact on the rest of the house saves a customer time and money on necessary actions like:
- Water removal
- Drying
- Cleanup
- Mold prevention
Protecting Flooring with Fast Extraction
One of the effective methods of water mitigation for Orlando homes includes removing standing water from the premises. It is among the most needed aspects of restoration and recovery to remove pooling water from flooring materials, and this initial effort is critical to prevent saturation and absorption into these semi-porous surfaces like engineered wood plank floors. We have a combination of pumps and vacuums to help with extraction needs.
Protecting Contents Through Relocation
Preserving and restoring what matters most to your family means providing the necessary outlets to clean and recover impacted belongings from a damaged site. Often, the best solution we can provide is relocation. Acting quickly can prevent unnecessary harm and damage to the contents of the house by moving them to an area unaffected by the current water damage incident.
Protecting Wall Assemblies with Plumbing Repairs
Another mitigation strategy that we can implement quickly when we arrive is to repair and restore the damaged structure. Leaks and breaks in the plumbing require replacing materials and reconnections, making this one of the priorities when access to the structural cavity is revealed. With a contractor license, we can complete these build-back needs with the same urgency and reliability of our restoration services without delays.
Water damage is happening every day. Having a trusted and experienced team of professionals to help when your Orlando home suffers from these conditions can be valuable. Give our SERVPRO of South Orange County team a call today at (407) 226-2621.

Creating a Safer Environment in Lake Nona Homes After a Fire
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
Indoor air quality IAQ is a key component of fire damage restoration in the Lake Nona area of Florida
Emergency services stabilize and secure a fire-damaged Lake Nona property when restoration begins.
Fires are not uncommon for Orange County and its thousands of residents. Fire damages are among the most common callouts for our experienced restoration professionals. To account for this, we have a rapid response team that can implement needed emergency services and mitigative strategies to avoid preventable destruction.
Clearing Bulk Materials and Debris
One of the first steps in the early recovery of fire damage to Lake Nona homes is to address the heaps of collapsed, ruined materials in the house. Structure fires overwhelm installed construction materials, making the removal of charred remnants, ash, and debris critical for reducing harsh odors, airborne contaminants, and formidable soot residues.
Creating a safe and stable post-fire environment in a home requires our technicians to appreciate and account for airborne contaminants and hazards. Circulating carcinogenic particles like soot present an immediate and overwhelming risk to those without appropriate protective equipment. Utilizing tools like HEPA air scrubbers can trap these contaminants and make the environment safer. HEPA scrubbers help with:
- Odors
- Mold spores
- Soot particles
- Ash
Eliminating Potentially Harmful Water
Another early mitigative action that our professionals can take is to focus on the water left behind after extinguishment. Depending on the spread and severity of the house fire, it can be expected to see many of the rooms saturated with water used to quell the blaze. Extraction and early drying solutions prevent unnecessary tear-out and reconstruction wherever possible.
There is no mistaking the violent and destructive force of fires spreading through homes and businesses of the Greater Orlando area. As leading restoration professionals, our SERVPRO of South Orange County team can help overcome the threats of fire damage as fast as possible. Give us a call today at (407) 226-2621.

- Harsh winds
- Hail
- Tropical storms
- Tree damage
Emergency Services to Protect Stored Belongings

Board-Up and Tarping Solutions

Advanced Water Restoration Goes Beyond the Surface in Orlando Homes
12/20/2021 (Permalink)
Advanced equipment like this LGR dehumidifier and specific methods like porting moisture to the exterior via rigged ducts, saves Orlando homes
Techniques for water damage mitigation and restoration throughout Orlando
Water damage is the most common call-outs for our professionals, so it is a situation that our team must stay prepared to face. We have a fast mitigative response with advanced tools ready 24/7.
Software to Focus the Restoration Process
When water cleanup in Orlando homes begins, our SERVPRO professionals initially rely on the information acquired with a thorough inspection and damage assessment. We input this data into our proprietary software SERVPRO DryBook to set a baseline for drying and cleaning production moving forward. This software also helps track the inventory of contents in the house and their condition throughout the restoration process.
Effective Extraction Tools
Before much of the focus can shift to trapped water in wall and floor assemblies, our professionals must remove the visible water from the surface of materials in the affected areas. Extraction plays a large role in the restoration process, and the choice of a water removal tool depends on the severity and placement of the water.
Tracking Moisture Movement
Not surprisingly, water can move quickly through porous building materials. Moisture can work beneath the surface with materials like wood flooring and cause irreversible warping and distortion of the planks. Using thermal imagery and other moisture detection tools, we can track where advanced drying equipment should be placed to help.
Thorough Drying Options for Homes
While much of the tools used to regulate moisture and water damage in a property have not changed in recent years, we are guided by many devices and instruments that help designate the best placement of drying machines and the frequencies of these units throughout the structure to maximize evaporation production. Some of the drying tools we use include:
- Centrifugal Air Movers
- Axial Air Movers
- Low-Grain Refrigerant Dehumidifiers
- Positive/Negative Pressure Systems
Cleaning up after water damage in area homes and businesses can be challenging. We have experienced professionals trained to provide rapid and thorough restoration solutions beginning as soon as we arrive. Give our SERVPRO of South Orange County a call today to help at (407) 226-2621.
What Are Some Important Questions to Ask Orlando Mold Remediation Professionals?
12/10/2021 (Permalink)
What's behind your walls? SERVPRO is trained to locate and remediate visible and hidden mold growth.
SERVPRO Answers Any Question to Educate and Reassure Homeowners Affected by Mold
Mold contamination is a common problem in many properties. However, there is considerable misinformation, especially about remediation. When you notice mold signs in your Orlando home, you might not know which of the numerous recommended remedies might be helpful to you.
Hiring a professional to help with mold remediation at your Orlando property is one of the best approaches since such providers have the necessary resources to contain mold effectively. SERVPRO has IICRC certified Applied Microbial Remediation technicians who have all the relevant mold development and management knowledge.
Some of the essential questions about mold include:
- Why does mold develop?
- Where does mold grow in a home?
- When does mold become a problem?
The questions may be relevant to you due to various reasons. For instance, you might notice mold developing in a house when least expected, so the question of why arises. Rather than quoting general possibilities, our SERVPRO technicians inspect the property to establish what sparked the contamination if no apparent signs of water damage are identified. We can use thermos-hygrometers to probe humidity levels in different areas of the house. We can also use thermal cameras to check for hidden water leaks in the walls, ceilings, and other cavities.
Where mold damage develops is another common question when mold exhibits subtle signs such as a musty smell but no visible patches. Mold readily colonizes when moisture interacts with organic materials such as wood, cardboard, paper, and ceiling tiles. Our SERVPRO technicians use various cues, including checking where the musty odor is more pungent or looking for concealed moisture, thus identifying areas in your house where the mold is likely hidden. We then drill small holes and inspect the site with borescopes for confirmation.
Knowing whether the mold contaminating your home is a significant problem or not is essential in planning the remediation. For minor contamination, the processes can be completed while the house is still occupied. Our SERVPRO technicians erect barriers for protection. However, if there is severe contamination, you need to vacate the home during remediation since mold exposure can cause health effects.
SERVPRO of South Orange County handles mold remediation professionally. Call us at (407) 226-2621. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

11/26/2021 (Permalink)
Many people think the danger is over after the fire is extinguished, but hazards still persist.
SERVPRO Ensures You Are Fully Informed About Hazards, Secondary Damage, and Other Issues
Fire can damage your property significantly, even if it burns for a few minutes leaving you with a ton of work to do or a hefty bill to foot. For most people, quickly restoring the property is ideal so that one can move on with life. While this is true, other beliefs may end up being counterproductive to the fire restoration efforts.
The issues that hamper fire restoration in Orlando properties can manifest in different ways. Some can stop the processes after you start, while others might lengthen the timeline to complete the exercise. You might need to halt the restoration due to injury or severe discomfort while carrying out some tasks. You might also take too long to complete the effort when you ignore some issues at the start of the process. Involving a professional like SERVPRO can help you avoid such outcomes since our technicians have the training and experience to avoid common mistakes.
Some common misconceptions about fire damage include the belief that:
- The danger is over after flames are out
- Damage stops when a fire is extinguished
- Speedy action always helps
Since you have to access the affected areas of the house to fix fire damage, you should spare a thought for your safety. Fire creates various hazards, including leaving harmful gases, sharp objects, and unstable structural elements. If you are injured while attempting to address damages, unnecessary delays occur. Our SERVPRO teams anticipate such hazards. That is why we are equipped with various PPE, including hard hats, rubber boots, and heavy-duty gloves.
Fire damage is never static. Even after extinguishing the flames, the property continues to deteriorate. The additional damage comes from moisture and corrosive residues. Our SERVPRO technicians pre-clean soot from vulnerable materials such as stone and metal, preventing corrosion. We also set up dehumidifiers for moisture management.

What Are Some Unique Ways to Handle Water Removal from Orlando Business Premises?
11/19/2021 (Permalink)
Leaking pipes cause water to flow over surfaces while simultaneously being absorbed by various materials.
SERVPRO Uses Advanced Equipment That Help Prevent Destructive Demolition during Removal
Once water leaks, it flows quickly over surfaces while simultaneously being absorbed by various materials. Although mopping and extracting with equipment such as wet vacuums provide an easy way to deal with surface water, the water absorbed by materials or trapped in cavities can be challenging to address. You may need professional assistance to manage such water removal processes.
Removing wet materials after extraction might be the straightforward water removal solution for Orlando business premises. However, that option can be fraught with problems, including the inconvenience of moving bulky items or the complexities of demolishing the affected areas. That is why professionals like SERVPRO invest in sophisticated equipment that can help you manage water removal without leaving everything in disarray.
Some of the Unique Water Removal Tools that Might Help Your Restore Normalcy Faster Include:
- Drying mats
- Drying chambers
- Wall cavity ventilating equipment
Sometimes water can reach unexpected areas within your property. For example, when water penetrates beneath a hard floor material such as tiles, only drying mats can help you remove it, thus avoiding other costly options such as removing the tiles. Our SERVPRO technicians lay the mats on the floor, forming an airtight seal, then connect their vacuum hoses to an extraction unit to remove liquid water trapped beneath the tiles or even wooden floorboards.
Ventilating equipment helps in drying wall interiors without having to remove the wall panels. The systems consist of hoses and several vents that can be inserted into walls to supply dry air. Our SERVPRO technicians drill small holes at the base of the wall, drain any trapped water first, and then connect the ventilating equipment.
SERVPRO of South Orange County has state-of-the-art equipment to simplify water removal from any commercial establishment. You can reach us at (407) 226-2621. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

A small blaze can impact the entire house. SERVPRO was able to make it "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO Relies on Advanced as Well as Simple Approaches for Effective Cleaning
Restoring your Lake Nona property after a fire incident is an elaborate process requiring various actions. Cleaning to remove fire and smoke residues is one such process. Correctly doing the cleaning is essential for faster turnaround, better outcomes, among other benefits.
Most people only focus on the significant factors such as equipment when thinking of fire and smoke cleanup in Lake Nona properties. However, many simple factors influence the outcome, including the approach taken when dealing with various house sections. SERVPRO technicians' training equips them with both advanced skills and simple, handy tips to address minor issues.
The main aspects of the cleanup that require unique approaches include:
- Cleaning ceilings
- Cleaning walls
- Onsite content cleanup
- Cleaning floors
In general, cleaning should follow a top-down approach to avoid re-soiling clean areas, so the ceiling tops the list of sites to clean after fire damage. Some essential tips during this stage include cleaning the ceiling panels or tiles first before working on fixtures such as lighting, HVAC vents, and other accessories. Since the height of ceilings makes them hard to reach, our SERVPRO technicians attach cleaning sponges to extension poles easing access and improving safety.
Wall surfaces are usually the most extensive section of the home that needs cleaning. Like the ceiling, cleaning walls should start with the surfaces before proceeding to windows, doors, cabinets, and other installed fixtures. One should expect variations in wall surfaces, especially in bathrooms and kitchens, where specialty cleaning products may be necessary.
Floors collect most of the soils released during the fire or other cleaning processes, and we handle those last. Starting from the back then moving towards the exit is the best approach. Our SERVPRO technicians also use furniture pads when placing items on freshly cleaned floors.
SERVPRO of South Orange County is best suited to handle fire and smoke cleanup in your property eliminating all traces of soiling, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (407) 226-2621.
What Does Fire Damage Restoration Take for Orlando Business Operators?
10/29/2021 (Permalink)
Soot can stain all surfaces in your building. SERVPRO has proven techniques to remove the residues.
Restoring Fire Damage Is Easier with Help from Experienced Technicians From SERVPRO
The level of damages left by fire depends on its intensity. Therefore, minimal damages are expected after a small fire. However, the definition of minimal damage is not specific, so you may not know what your Orlando business facility precisely requires to regain its preloss state.
Completing fire damage restoration at your Orlando business facility is easier when you know what issues the fire causes. One easy way to access such information is by involving a professional restoration team that handles such incidents regularly. SERVPRO helps analyze fire loss sites and also provides restoration services.
Some typical issues to address during restoration include:
- Soot stains
- Strong odors
- Weakened structural materials
- Damaged electrical components in appliances
The problems develop for various reasons, so you cannot expect the same issues in every incident. Soot stains are common when soot deposited on fabrics mixes with moisture during fire suppression or cleaning. Staining can also form on polished stone surfaces if fire residues are left in place over extended periods. Our SERVPRO teams use different approaches to combat staining, including regulating moisture levels and pre-cleaning vulnerable materials.
Smoky odors are common after a fire incident, but they usually go away after cleaning. However, if the smell is too strong, elaborate deodorization is necessary. Such deodorization can be incorporated into the cleaning processes or performed independently.
Deodorization of your business premise after fire loss may require:
- Water-based deodorizers to mix with cleaning agents
- Fogging with solvent-based deodorizers
- Neutralizing odor molecules with activated oxygen
Structural changes are also common after fires creating hazards such as the risk of ceilings or shelves collapsing, causing injuries. Deep charring can conceal weakened structural elements since it can be mistaken for residue deposits. Our SERVPRO restoration technicians confirm which areas have residues and where there is deep charring.
SERVPRO of South Orange County relies on vast experience and training to deliver the best solutions after fire damage. Call us at (407) 226-2621. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.
What Can Help Simplify Mold Remediation in Lake Nona Properties?
10/22/2021 (Permalink)
Do you know how to prevent mold from spreading? SERVPRO does!
SERVPRO Provides Highly Trained Teams to Manage Mold Remediation Processes
Once mold develops in your property, you may have difficulty managing it by not taking appropriate action. The correct remediation approach should help restore preloss conditions in your Lake Nona property. It should also help keep costs manageable.
Mold remediation in Lake Nona properties requires several steps. Correctly handling each step is essential, so access to the right skills and equipment is mandatory. The restoration teams from SERVPRO include IICRC-certified microbial remediation technicians (AMRT) who are fully skilled in handling the process.
Everyday actions required as part of the remediation include:
- Removing visible mold debris
- Preventing the spread of mold or its residues
- Refinishing the affected areas
One of the signs of a mold infestation is the patches or stains on wall and ceiling surfaces. The changes develop from the deterioration of materials or surface finishes and the accumulation of hyphae clusters. Removing all the masses of moldy materials is essential to restore preloss conditions.
Your attempts to address a mold problem might end up spreading it to other initially unaffected areas of your property. The spread might involve the fine residues released after disturbing moldy surfaces. Alternatively, new growth might develop if appropriate conditions are created in such areas. Our SERVPRO teams establish containment measures to prevent such spread along with an application of a fungicide.
Mold containment is more than one process since it involves:
- Setting up containment barriers
- Vacuuming all moldy residues from surfaces
- Moisture management, especially when cleaning the affected areas
The best containment barriers are airtight to prevent the spread of microscopic mold residues. Our SERVPRO technicians use 6-mil plastic sheets and spring-loaded metal bars to create such barriers, especially during demolition to remove unsalvageable materials. Another good step is the establishment of negative air pressure within the contained area.
SERVPRO of South Orange County helps refinish the restored areas by painting or reinstalling materials, thus resolving a mold problem, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (407) 226-2621.
Do Carpeted Floors Increase the Urgency of Water Cleanup for Your Orlando Office?
10/6/2021 (Permalink)
Carpet is the flooring of choice for offices, and water can damage it. SERVPRO is always on call to handle your water damage restoration needs.
SERVPRO Expedites Water Removal to Prevent Advanced Soiling and Structural Damage
Water discharge can be accidental or negligent. It can also happen at any time, day or night. The timing can complicate decision-making because you might not be ready to embark on an extensive water cleanup process at certain times, such as the close of the day, since the process can stretch late into the night.
It is not ideal to delay water cleanup at your Orlando office, especially if the affected floors are carpeted. Carpets absorb water quickly, and when left wet over extended periods, structural damages occur that lead to the disintegration of their layered construction. Water restoration technicians from SERVPRO have significant experience dealing with carpets and therefore understand intricate details of water damage to carpeting.
Your Office Carpet is a Layered Amalgamation of Various Materials, Including:
- Fibers like nylon, wool, polypropylene, or polyester
- Primary backing made from thermoplastic or latex adhesive
- Secondary backing made from jute or polypropylene
That layered construction is one of the reasons you should not delay water removal from your office, among other reasons. After prolonged exposure to moisture, the adhesives holding the primary fibers to the backing deteriorate, leading to irreversible damage such as delaminating. Stains and foul odors are other severe issues that develop.
Since SERVPRO crews can clean up your property even after hours, you should take advantage to enjoy the convenience and prevent a host of secondary problems and costs that would otherwise pile up.
Cleanup involves several processes, including:
- A thorough extraction of pooling water from floor surfaces
- Cleaning using hot water extraction, bonnet cleaning, or showcase
- Drying the carpet flat or by floating
SERVPRO of South Orange County takes water cleanup exercises seriously. Call us at (407) 226-2621 to take care of a water spill, “Like it never even happened.”
What Differentiates is Day-to-Day Cleaning from Fire Restoration Cleaning in Lake Nona Properties?
9/29/2021 (Permalink)
Smoke from this fire traveled throughout the home. SERVPRO removed the smoke odors and soot.
SERVPRO Performs House Fire Cleanup to Restore Pre-Loss Conditions
The soiling of various materials is typical in the aftermath of a fire and is characterized chiefly by sooty or stained surfaces. Restoration of such surfaces requires cleaning. However, it differs from the regular cleaning that you perform around your house every day.
Cleaning during fire restoration in Lake Nona properties involves removing residues from the exterior and interior surfaces of the structure and its contents. The distinction between contents and structural items is essential because we can move contents for offsite cleaning while structural materials can only be cleaned where they stand. When done professionally by SERVPRO, restorative cleaning takes care of many issues.
Typical fire-related problems that you do not have to worry about after such cleaning include:
- Strong smoke odors
- Blistering or charring
- Airborne particles
Smoke movement is uninhibited since convection currents drive it, leaving deposits in many house sections, including inside closets, wall cavities, and other hard-to-reach areas. Therefore, restorative cleaning may involve the disassembly of various fixtures. Fire Restoration Technicians from SERVPRO are trained on how to manage such deconstruction safely. We also rebuild and refinish the targeted areas.
Smoke constitutes different materials, including solid particles, aerosols, gases, and suspended particles. A significant percentage of these materials end up embedded in various materials resulting in varying cleaning difficulties. One way SERVPRO eases the process is by using specially formulated cleaning products.
The most commonly used products include:
- General surface cleaners with low pH
- Heavy-Duty cleaners which are highly alkaline
- Glass cleaners which combine solvents and cleaning agents
- Liquid crème cleaners that contain mild abrasives
SERVPRO of South Orange County handles fire restoration tasks professionally, eliminating all traces of the loss, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (407) 226-2621.
Why Should You Be Concerned About Electricity When Addressing Flood Damage in Your Orlando Home?
9/29/2021 (Permalink)
Water and electricity don’t mix. Safety is our overriding factor when performing water damage restoration.
SERVPRO Takes Care of Electrical Issues to Prevent Interruption of Flood Restoration
Flooding is primarily a moisture problem. However, it involves other aspects too that, if improperly handled, can lead to unpleasant outcomes. The electrical systems in your Orlando home are one aspect you must consider since flooding interferes with them in many ways.
Issues with electrical systems can interfere with or halt the flood damage restoration at your Orlando home. A problem that can stop the restoration processes is personal injury from electrocution, especially if the water reaches high enough to touch the electrical outlets on the walls. SERVPRO technicians tackle this problem differently, including using non-contact voltage detectors to check for electricity flow through water before walking into flooded areas. We also wear PPE such as rubber boots and heavy-duty gloves, which offer sufficient insulation.
Electricity can also halt restoration processes if:
- It damages the water restoration equipment
- There is no power supply to your property due to storms
- There is interference with the distribution
Many of the equipment necessary when restoring flood damage, including water extractors and drying apparatus, are electrically powered. Operating such equipment in a damp environment without protection can lead to permanent damage. Safety comes in the form of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. Such security is standard in outlets placed in rooms with water sources such as bathrooms or kitchens. Since it is not always possible to access the protected outlets, other solutions are necessary. Our SERVPRO technicians use portable GFCIs to protect restoration equipment when using regular outlets.
Other tools that enhance the safety and reliability of electricity include:
- Circuit analyzers that check circuit amperage
- Portable generators
- Power distribution boxes for power conversion
SERVPRO of South Orange County addresses common as well as unique issues during flood damage restoration. Call us at (407) 226-2621. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Removing Flood Water from Orlando Attics After Storm Damage
9/9/2021 (Permalink)
Flooding can quickly cause water damage. Contact SERVPRO for water removal and remediation services.
Flooding in the Attic Can Affect a Wide Area of Your Orlando Home.
Fully utilizing household space for Orlando homeowners means having finished attics for the additional square footage of the residence. When roof vulnerabilities exist when strong storms pass through Central Florida, homes can become susceptible to penetrating flood water that pools along the floors.
Removing Water from a Finished Attic
When the attic becomes the victim of penetrating storm damage, flood water extraction in Orlando homes must happen quickly. Not all extractors are ideal for the confined space and distance necessary to reach the upper levels. Some of the most common tools for attic extraction include:
- High-pressure pumps
- Truck-mount extractors
- Wet vacuums
- Light wands
Content Relocation and Cleaning
While our responding technicians intend to restore and clean damaged contents on-site, there are solutions for more challenging restoration needs. Our nearby SERVPRO facility provides the appropriate setting for surface cleaning, deodorization, and drying. When restoration completes, our technicians can return these items to where they were acquired.
Drying Wood Flooring in Attic Living Space
Wood flooring is among the commonly installed materials in finished attic spaces for how long these floors last and their lower cost. With many of these floors not being water-resistant, any standing water concerns can begin to absorb into the planks fast. While the trapped water is still free, it is not yet chemically bonded with wood molecules, drying mats and other evaporation methods could be effective.
Flooding is one of the most devastating disasters that many Orlando area homes and businesses face in their lifetime. With how rapidly areas like the attic can become overwhelmed by infiltrating water, we have efficient extraction and drying solutions to help. Our SERVPRO of South Orange County team is standing by 24/7 at (407) 226-2621.

Will Expert Stormwater Extraction Protect Lake Nona Residences?
3/22/2021 (Permalink)
Storm damage to your home is very disheartening. SERVPRO has IICRC certified technicians and is ready 24/7 365 days a year.
SERVPRO uses industry best practices in all Lake Nona area flooding scenarios
The powerful equipment and scalable crews arriving at your home after torrential rains and high winds can be as overwhelming as the storm itself. Speed and thoroughness are critical to removing the bulk of the rainwater and the unavoidable contaminants contained therein. Whether the property affected is vast or small and cozy, rapid extraction followed by comprehensive drying is the only way to ensure the structure's return to pre-disaster condition.
Is DIY Water Removal a Reasonable Choice after Storm Flooding?
Stormwater extraction in Lake Nona can be challenging without the training, experience, and appropriate tools possessed by SERVPRO crews. First, stormwater nearly always contains hazardous substances that can accelerate structural damage and imperil the health of your family. Second, exterior damage and the propensity of water to migrate into building cavities far from the source make it difficult to ensure complete water removal. SERVPRO crews:
- Assess for water hazards
- Consider and implement controlled demolition to release hidden water
- Use sensitive moisture detectors and meters to trace perimeters of water incursion and establish baselines for drying goals
- Operate commercial-grade truck-mounted and portable extractors to remove water fast
- Contain and dispose of contaminated water safely per local rules

With all of the natural lakes, waterways, and wetlands in central Florida, it may come as a surprise that the City of Orlando planned and invested in a human-made installation called the Orlando Wetlands Park. Learning about the vision and mission of the Park allows an intriguing window into the ways society can rectify past ecological mistakes for the benefit of the land, water, animals, and people.
What Were the Pre-Development Characteristics of the Area Now Occupied by Orlando Wetlands Park?
Before intensive settlement and development, the land upon which the Orlando Wetlands Park stood as an integral part of the St. Johns River floodplain. Specifically, the land had the features of a wet prairie:
- Treeless plains
- Sparse to dense grasses and other herbaceous plants, including:
- Wiregrass
- Maidencane
- Spikerush
- Beakrush
- Hatpins
- Marsh pinks
- Sundews
- Black-eyed Susan
- White-top sedge
- Meadow beauty
- Yellow-eyed grass
- Wax myrtle
- Pitcher plants
- Tickseed
- Panicums
- Seasonal inundated or saturated with fresh water up to 100 days per year.
- Suffered from fires every 2 to 4 years
How Did Settlement Affect the Area?
The Orlando Wetlands Park region saw significant non-Indigenous settlement starting in the late 1830s. Fort Christmas was built in 1837, and after the Civil War, the settlers commenced the draining of pre-existing wetlands for farming. Other uses included:
- Cattle grazing in the early 20th century
- Logging
- Pine tapping for turpentine
- Dairy farming beginning in the 1940s
How Did the Orlando Area Handle Increasing Amounts of Wastewater?
As the Orlando region grew precipitously after the building of tourist venues in the 1960s and later, the United States, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stepped in with mandates to consolidate a range of wastewater treatment facilities. In 1979 The Iron Bridge Regional Water Reclamation Facility (Iron Bridge) was the first attempt by the City of Orlando to merge the various wastewater sources. Local waterways were overwhelmed by the effluent within five years.
What Was the Answer to the Increase in Wastewater in Orlando?
Orlando purchased 1,650 acres near Fort Christmas to create an engineered wetland to manage the wastewater crisis. A year after the 1986 purchase, 1,220 acres of the land formerly used as pasture was primed to treat the reclaimed water. Up to 35 million gallons of reclaimed water pumped 17 miles from Iron Bridge passes through 4-foot diameter pipes to three wetlands, including mixed and deep marches and hardwood and cypress swamp. The wetlands clear the reclaimed water of nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus. From pumping to final release into the St. Johns River takes 30 to 40 days. In addition to cleaning the waste, the Orlando Wetlands Park has become a refuge for birds and other wildlife, 18 of which are considered threatened, protected or endangered.
How Does SERVPRO Restore Your Flood Damaged Home?
Finding reliable Orlando flooding removal after storm damage is just as critical for your home as the Wetlands Park wastewater solution was for the city. SERVPRO stands ready to:
- Secure external damage
- Assess and control flooding-caused safety hazards
- Consider controlled demolition to release fluids and permit effective structural drying.
- Rapidly pump and extract flood water, containing and disposing of contaminated according to local regulations.

SERVPRO Addresses Flooding in Orlando Homes
Cleaning up after a flood is different from cleaning up from a water leak. Floodwater is contaminated (category 3- black water) and needs careful handling to ensure safety for the homeowner and SERVPRO technicians.
SERVPRO understands flood removal processes in Orlando, including the use of appropriate chemical cleaning agents. Many cleaning agents work in other situations, but only specific types kill the numerous fungi and bacteria found in typical flooding situations.
Cleaning agents for flooding:
- Phenolics: Made from coal tar derivatives or synthetics and is highly effective against many kinds of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. They can lose their strength over time, so technicians are sure to use recently produced phenolics.
- Chlorines: Strong oxidizing agents that have low toxicity and are useful in flood situations.
- Quaternary Compounds: Ammonia is the most common type and is also very effective.
- Botanicals: Pleasant fragrance cleaning agent that incorporates thyme oil or citric acid and is still effective.

SERVPRO Makes Water Damage Repairs in Orlando
When it comes to effectively repairing water damage, drying is critical. Without being able to dry the impacted area effectively, you cannot adequately repair damages, particularly in humid climates like in Orlando and the rest of Florida.
Water damage restoration for your Orlando home means effectively drying the areas while repairing the house. One way that technicians approach drying the impacted area is to break up your home into 'drying zones.' This helps isolate the areas requiring attention. Each drying zone may have different amounts or types of equipment due to varying conditions. For instance, some areas may not need as many air movers or dehumidifiers.
There are two types of drying systems found in drying zones:
- Open drying system: doors and windows are open, allowing fresh air to act as a facilitator in the drying process.
- Closed drying system: IICRC certified technicians close off the area with doors, windows and heavy plastic to create an optimal drying environment.

Finding Fire Cleanup Help in Orlando

Plagued by odors and residue after a fire? Call SERVPRO for effective fire damage remediation services.
SERVPRO Assists Homeowners with Fire Cleanup
When you think of Orlando, Florida, the first thing you may think about is theme parks and tourist attractions. However, Orlando is a city with a rich history and over 250,000 residents. Orlando does boast of having the most visitors per year than any other destination in the world. In 2015, 68 million people visited Orlando.
Something most people don't know is that Orlando has over 100 lakes. The most prominent and famous lake in Orlando is Lake Eola, which is actually a sinkhole. In 1873 the cattle farmer Jacob Summerlin bought the land where Lake Eola sits. Little did anyone know a sinkhole at the edge of the property over a natural aquifer 200 feet underground. The aquifer filled from the bottom and the rainwater caused a sinkhole from above, creating what we now know as Lake Eola. At one time, the lake was 80 feet deep, but now the maximum depth is 23 feet 8 inches with an average depth of 11 feet 5 inches.
Lake Eola is the center of downtown Orlando. The Summerlin family donated it to the city in 1888 with the agreement that it would be a beautification project. Since then, there have been many beautification projects and updates to keep the park and the lake a beautiful attraction to both residents and visitors.
A beautiful feature of Lake Eola is the fountain. In 1912 it was built for 10,000 and quickly became a top-rated attraction. The city replaced the fountain for $350,000 in the late 1950s and named it the Centennial Fountain. Unfortunately, lightning struck the iconic fountain in 2009. However, being that it is such an essential piece of Orlando's history, the city spent 2 million dollars to repair it and update it to include spray jets during the day and a light show at night. The city also renamed the fountain to memorialize the fountain builder from the 50s. It is now called the Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain.
Fun things to do at Lake Eola Park:
- Enjoy the playground, memorials, or public art.
- Paddle with one of the famous swan boats on the lake.
- Watch the various breeds of swans living at the lake; Trumeter, Black Neck, Whooper, Roayl, Mute, and Australian Black.
- Enjoy the farmers market, summer movies, or even concerts.
Methods of Cleaning After a Fire
Fire Cleanup is not always straightforward and best addressed by professionals. Different methods and products are required for optimal results. Your belongings may require off site cleaning, while you may need to clean the structure of your home, including permanent surfaces and building materials.
Our Professional SERVPRO team identifies how to best clean each surface by testing the surface and determining the type of residue they are cleaning. It is important to remember that not every surface is the same, and technicians should approach them accordingly.
The two categories of materials for cleaning are:
- Washable: materials that respond to water-based cleaning products.
- Non-washable: materials that respond best to dry cleaning methods such as vacuuming or brushing away residue.

Orlando Businesses Trust SERVPRO For Commercial Water Removal
12/18/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of South Orange County genuinely cares about their city. Call them today if you have any issues.
Commercial Water Removal Should Begin As Rapidly As Possible in Orlando Properties
The city of Orlando makes most people think of Disney World. However, there is so much more to this area of Florida than that. The town got established in 1838, shortly after the Seminole War, which resulted in the U.S. Army building Fort Gatlin to protect the settlers from hostile Indian tribes in the area. Before the era became known as its present-day name, it was known as Jernigan, after one of the region's founding families.
To get considered as a fully-fledged town on its own, Jernigan needed a post office, and by 1850, it had one. The community continued attracting people and growing. In 1857, the town changed its name to Orlando. At the time of the formal incorporation in 1875, the city had 85 residents and 22 registered voters among them. The one fact about the town that no one is sure about is where the name came from; there are four well-known theories:
- A local politician named the city after a man who worked for him
- The same politician was a Shakespeare fan and named the town after a character in the play "As You Like It"
- An ox herder died passing through the town, and locals started referring to the city as "there lies Orlando"
- The town was named after a U.S. soldier from the Seminole Wars
Citrus Builds Up Orlando
Between 1875 through 1895, Orlando became the center for citrus production in Florida. An unprecedented freeze hit the area in 1895 and forced many of the smaller orange and grapefruit growers out of business as they could not absorb the loss. This led to many of the larger companies buying out the groves and creating the term, "Citrus Baron."
Military Base Attracts Jobs in Orlando
During WWII, the local municipal airport got converted into Orlando Army Air Base. This led to a new airport getting built and quickly getting changed into Pinecastle Air Force Base.
With the establishment of the bases, Martin Marietta, now known as Lockheed Martin, built a significant aerospace defense plant during the post-WWII growth period in 1956 and hired a large segment of the local population to work I'm the facility.
The Cruise Industry Loves Orlando
The Beachline Expressway gives residents easy passage to get to Port Canaveral, a popular cruise ship terminal. Another large scale employer in the area is the Kennedy Space Center.
Walt Disney World in Orlando
When Walt Disney announced in 1965, he intended to build a theme park in Orlando, shifting the focus for vendors in the city to get involved in the marketplace's tourism sector. After breaking ground shortly after his announcement, Walt Disney World opened in October 1971. There are as many jobs in the tourism industry as in the tech and agriculture sectors, and this area of Florida boasts more theme parks and attractions than any other place on earth.
Top Attractions in Orlando
Along with the Magic Kingdom that takes more than a day to see most of it, there are many venues for people to visit, such as Orlando Studios, where there is an ever-changing group of rides, shows, and more. Seaworld is another massive draw for tourists and locals alike. With killer whales, dolphins, seals, and more, this venue introduces attendees to a host of cool experiences to interact with animals. To compete with that, Disney opened up an Animal Kingdom. It allows visitors to have encounters with exotic animals, with over 2000 animals consisting of 300 unique species.
There are a vast number of outdoor activities to engage in for residents and tourists alike. Hiking season is available all year round. Great places to hike in the Orlando area include:
- Rock Springs
- Kelly Park
- Winter Gardens
Stand-up paddleboarding is an activity that is uniquely Floridian. There are several venues throughout the city where paddleboards can get rented, and some come with instructors that teach users how to stand up and paddle. For anyone that loves a faster pace, there are ample areas to engage in ziplining.
Hurricanes in Orlando
Because the city of Orlando is further inland, it sometimes avoids the wrath of hurricanes and tropical storms. However, the city is no stranger to the destructive power of hurricane-force winds. Flash flooding can also be an issue requiring local property owners to get their homes and businesses professionally extracted and dried. The year-round temperatures are mild in the winter, with the average low reaching the low 50s and the highs in the 90s.
What Are The Steps For Commercial Water Removal in Orlando Properties?
When SERVPRO gets the call for commercial water removal in Orlando properties, the techs arrive quickly so they can begin the restoration services as rapidly as possible. The technicians scope the property and look for obvious migration paths of the water and determine if there are any furnishings, stock, or computer equipment that needs removal out of the area.
Collections of moisture that are not readily visible can get seen using specialized equipment such as:
- Moisture detectors
- Probes for floors
- Infrared cameras
Once identified, the techs choose the type of water extraction method best suited for the amount of water. One of the most commonly used pieces of equipment is the portable pump. These powerful devices can pull moisture up and out, enabling the drying phase of the mitigation to take less time. For clean up situations that involve large scale removal of standing water, the techs have access to both truck-mounted and submersible pumps. Commercial water extraction needs exacting attention as soon as possible. Afterward, they use their professional drying equipment to ensure that the structure verifies as dry as quickly. The final cleanup and disinfection can begin so the building can reopen for business.

Orlando Residents Can Count on Us to Restore Their Home When Flooding Happens
Orlando, FL, is a thriving, bustling city in the heart of the Orlando Metropolitan Area. It is home to over 287,000 people as of 2019. Known as the "City Beautiful," thousands of tourists flock to Orlando every year to enjoy the sun and sand that Florida offers.
Walt Disney Shares a Dream and Tourism Explodes
As one of the most visited cities anywhere globally, two of the main attractions are Universal Orlando Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort. Much of the tourism that takes place today is owed to Walt Disney. When he chose to build Walt Disney World in 1965, the economy grew. Walt picked the area because it was further inland and less likely to be hit by hurricane damage, and the rest is history.
And the Fun Continues
When the resort opened in 1971, the growth of the area was phenomenal. Tourism is the city's primary source of revenue. Orlando has more entertainment venues and theme parks than any location in the entire world. Visitors can not only enjoy Disney World with its Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center but other magical places such as:
- Universal Orlando
- SeaWorld Orlando
- Legoland
- Fun Spot America
- Madame Tussauds
- Sealife Aquarium
Conventions are Big Business
Another source of revenue is the conventions that are held each year in Orlando. In 2004, the Orange County Convention Center increased in size to over 2 million square feet. One of the main attractions to the thousands of convention attendees is the skyscrapers that form a stunning skyline. There are 19 skyscrapers in Metro Orlando, a sight to behold at night along the water's edge.
A City Built on Industry and Hi-Tech
Orlando is recognized nationally as a hub of innovation in:
- Agricultural technology
- Digital media
- Aviation
- Software design
- Aerospace
The city employs over 53,000 people in a $13.4 billion technology industry. Over 150 international businesses represent roughly 20 countries.
Central Florida Research Park
This research park is the 7th largest in the country. It is sprawled over more than a thousand acres and is where more than 120 companies perform in-depth research. The United States' primary military simulation and training programs are headquartered here. The world's most extensive modeling and simulation convention is held annually in the Orange County Convention Center. Metro Orlando is where the simulation procurement commands for all branches of the military are located.
Entertainment, Television, and Film Sectors
Orlando businesses such as the following support the electronic gaming and film and television industries:
- Universal Studios
- Disney's Hollywood Studios
- Full Sail University
- UCF College of Arts and Humanities
- Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy
- Headquarters of Ripley Entertainment
- Other entertainment schools and companies
Students worldwide come to Orlando to learn film production, video game design, computer animation, and many other entertainment areas.
The Performing Arts Contribute to Cultural Experiences
Many different types of music can be experienced throughout the city. From rock to Latino, the music scene is a part of the entertainment background. Motion picture production is a multi-million-dollar industry in Orlando. Beginner artists come from all over to take part in the Florida Film Festival each year. But other performing arts do well also.
Theater productions thrive in the Orlando Metropolitan Area. Both professional and semi-professional venues are spread throughout the city. Several well-known companies include the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Orlando Ballet, and the Orlando Repertory Theatre. Taking place at the Bob carr Performing Arts Centre are national Broadway Shows. The Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival attracts touring shows from all over the world. And for lovers of classical music, there is the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orlando Symphony Orchestra.
Sports Lover's Paradise
If you are into sports, this city has it. Two major league teams, the Orlando Magic basketball team, and Orlando City SC soccer team, call this area home. It is also home to some minor league teams, including:
- Florida Fire Frogs
- Orlando Solar Bears ECHL
- Orlando Predators
- Orlando Anarchy
Several famous athletes come from here. Shaquille O'Neal, Tiger Woods, and Ken Griffey, Jr are just a few examples. The second biggest fighting tournament occurs annually at the Community Effort Orlando, which draws over 4,000 visitors from countries worldwide. Football is a major draw as well, with events like the Citrus Bowl and the Cure Bowl.
Something for Everyone
No matter what you enjoy doing, you are sure to find it in Orlando. Fishing, watersports, theme parks, and cultural venues abound. Athletes can enjoy golfing and other sports activities. The summer season offers sun and sand while visiting in the winter can help you escape winter and avoid cold weather. Come in the summer and enjoy the sand and sun. Visit in the winter and avoid cold weather. Orlando welcomes you any time of year.
Storms & Flooding are Always a Concern
Although further inland than other major cities in Florida such as Tampa, Orlando is still prone to storms, hurricanes and tornadoes can wreak havoc on coastal towns. The weather events in 2020 have been incredibly damaging and have occurred more often. With these storms comes flooding. SERVPRO provides flooding cleanup to homes that have been impacted by floodwaters from storms.
Let the Professionals Handle Flooding Cleanup
Floodwater is contaminated water and can be highly dangerous. Health effects can arise from the various contaminants within the water. As floods rage through a town, they bring with them:
- Dirt
- Debris
- Bacteria
- Medical waste
- Chemical waste
- Dead animals
- Microbial contaminants
Homeowners should not attempt to clean up contaminated water on their own. At SERVPRO, we have the right PPE and other equipment to do the job safely and professionally. We provide emergency flood mitigation and then get to work cleaning, repairing, and restoring your home.
We Understand Storms
As residents of the area, we know what storm damage can do. It can be stressful as you try to keep your family together while being concerned about your home. SERVPRO of South Orange County can help ease that stress. Contact us at (407) 226-2621 for flooding cleanup.

Should The Response To Water Damage Be Thorough or Fast in Orlando?
10/31/2020 (Permalink)
It is possible to get good results fast when water damages your property.
SERVPRO Takes Various Steps during Water Damage Repair in Orlando Properties to Guarantee Faster Delivery of Satisfactory Results
In the aftermath of a water loss incident, you might be torn between doing a thorough restoration and getting a faster outcome. In many cases, faster results could mean overlooking some issues, while thoroughness can extend the process beyond the standard timelines. SERVPRO professionals combine their extensive training and experience handling similar tasks to help Orlando homeowners get the desired outcomes.
What aspects of water damage repair in Orlando properties lead to delays?
• Identifying the full extent of damages
• Drying wet materials
• Cleaning soiled areas
After water leaks into your Orlando house, the moisture migrates to various sections, causing hidden and observable damages. Some of the hidden damages might include deterioration of:
• Insulation
• Subfloor materials such as OSB
• Materials affected by mold
Identifying hidden damages can take time because of the need to remove overlying materials to reach the damaged areas. Our SERVPRO technicians expedite the process by using specialized equipment to reveal the affected areas. For instance, a thermal camera helps reveal pockets of wetness in hidden areas revealing where technicians should demolish rather than opening up all areas.
Are there repair processes that help save time without diminishing effectiveness?
Repairing water damage often involves countering the effects moisture has on various materials. For instance, wooden frames or floorboards tend to swell when saturated with water. Drying them reverses the situation. Instead of applying regular drying procedures such as ventilating the wet area, our SERVPRO technicians opt for advanced alternatives such as setting up drying chambers. The chamber is created by overlaying a plastic sheet over the wet materials then circulating dry air in the enclosure. Other advanced processes can also help repair other issues such as staining, deep soiling, and even help remove mold residues.
It is possible to get good results fast when water damages your property. Call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621 to help manage any issue, “Like it never even happened.”
How Can Dog Owners in Orlando Keep Their Furry Friends Safe During Fire Damage Restoration?
10/25/2020 (Permalink)
Make sure your pets and family are safe when facing a fire. Then contact our experienced SERVPRO team for remediation services.
Orlando Dog Owners are Concerned about Their Pets During Fire Damage Restoration
Orlando is an excellent place for dog owners. There are dog-friendly beaches in the area, including beaches just for dogs and their owners, plus plenty of dog parks. Local pet owners love their furry friends and want to keep them safe and protected from potential disasters.
Dog owners are understandably very relieved when their pets survive an Orlando home fire with no harm. However, they still worry about whether their pets will be safe during fire damage restoration in their Orlando homes. SERVPRO customers often ask us if it is safe for their pets to stay in the house while we work.
Can your pet stay in your home while SERVPRO is working?
We recommend moving your dog to a safe location outside of your home. Depending on the extent of the fire in Orlando, there could be many hazards for them in your house:
- Nails, glass, or broken bits of wood on the floor
- Hanging drywall or collapsed ceilings
- Firefighting chemicals or leftover water from fire hoses
It is best for your pet – and better for your peace of mind – if you can arrange for them to go to a shelter or stay with a trusted friend or family member.
How can dog owners protect their furry friends from a fire?
You cannot always prevent a fire, but you can take steps to protect your pet in the event of a blaze:
- Get a “pets inside” door sticker to alert firefighters to the presence of animals
- Practice fire drills with your pets – rehearse how you would remove them from the house during a fire
- Know where your dog likes to hide so you will not waste time finding them
- Keep up to date with obedience training and classes – you want to know your dog will follow your directions in an emergency
How can dog owners make things easier for their pets during fire damage restoration?
There is a high chance that your dog will need to go to a friend or a shelter while SERVPRO of South Orange County is restoring your home. You can make this transition easier for your pet, and the person tasked with caring for them, by:
- Keeping up to date vaccination and medical records in a fireproof box
- Having a stock of medications on hand
- Preparing an “away kit” with favorite toys and blankets
- Putting together emergency instructions that include feeding schedules, medicines, and any behavioral notes
- Making sure you have a secure and comfortable pet carrier, and a spare collar and lead
What will SERVPRO do after you send your pet to another location?
Our technicians will take care of every aspect of fire damage restoration.
We clean soot residue from the walls and ceilings of your home and arrange for them to be re-painted if necessary. We can also take care of any structural damage such as broken windows or doors, and damaged walls or ceilings. Safety is our priority – we create a safe working area before we start, and if we find electrical or plumbing hazards, we call in specialists to deal with them.
We also clean your personal belongings, including sofas and chairs, tables, home office furniture, keepsakes, and even clothes, linens, and upholstery. We can use HEPA vacuuming, dry brushing, and wet wiping on-site, and we can also send your belongings to our cleaning facility for deep cleaning.
If there is water left from firefighting efforts, we will pump it out and use fans and dehumidifiers to dry your home. Drying is a vital part of fire damage restoration because damp walls, furniture, carpets, or drapes provide ripe breeding grounds for fungus.
What is an ozone generator, and how does it help?
Deodorizing is an essential part of fire remediation. Leftover smoke odors are very distressing for people, which is why we take steps to ensure your home smells fresh.
One way of fighting odors is by using an ozone generator. The clean smell of the air after a thunderstorm comes from natural ozone. Ozone generators use ozone’s natural deodorizing properties to clean the air after a fire and remove smoke smells.
Ozone generators are not safe for use around pets, plants, or untrained people. That is why we train our technicians to safely use the machines and equip them with the correct personal protective equipment. Ozone is a powerful odor eater, but its use should be closely supervised. Our technicians will let you know how soon you and your pets can safely re-enter the area after ozone use.
We can also use hydroxyl generators, air scrubbers, and activated carbon filters to fight odors.
For pet-friendly fire damage remediation, call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621.
Can SERVPRO Clean Pet Beds During Water Mitigation?
10/9/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO knows how much our pets are more like family, instead of pets. SERVPRO can be there for your furry family too.
Orlando Pet Owners Want to Know What Will Happen During Water Mitigation
Orlando pet owners know how much fun pets can be – and how much time and money they take. It is worth the investment to take good care of your pet, but of course, owners are keen to save money where possible.
There are numerous reasons you might need water mitigation in Orlando, such as a burst pipe or leaking appliance. If you happen to suffer water damage near where your pet sleeps, you might find their bed gets saturated.
What happens when a pet bed gets water damage?
Water damage has a range of effects, including:
- Discoloration or color bleeding on the surface
- An unpleasant wet odor
- The risk of mold growth
Should owners throw pet beds away?
Pet beds are inexpensive, and you might decide it is easier to replace it after water mitigation. However, if your pet is especially attached to their bed or you would rather clean it, SERVPRO can help.
How can SERVPRO help?
Our technicians can use spot cleaning or even wet fogging to cleanse and deodorize textiles, including your dog or cat’s favorite bed. We also send items to our cleaning facility for specialist hydraulic cleaning, which is gentle and environmentally friendly, yet powerful.
Drying is an integral part of water mitigation. Our techs will prop the bed up so air can move around it, then place air movers and dehumidifiers around it to encourage water evaporation. We can also monitor the moisture in the environment during drying to ensure the best results.
Can all kinds of pet beds be salvaged?
If you have a smaller pet, like a gerbil or guinea pig, that uses straw or wood shavings as bedding, these must be tossed out and replaced. However, as they are relatively cheap and easy to get, we hope that will not be too inconvenient.
In many cases, pet beds can be cleaned. This does not only include store-bought beds. It also includes:
- Their favorite blankets
- Mattresses and pads
- That corner of the sofa they always sleep on
If you are worried about where your pet will sleep after water mitigation, call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621.
How Can I Have a Bonfire Safely?
9/28/2020 (Permalink)
Everyone loves a bonfire, just be sure to have fun safely and call SERVPRO if anything goes awry.
Bonfires Are Fun in the Fall But There Are Some Safety Guidelines to Protect Your Orlando Home
Autumn is the perfect time for a bonfire. The temperatures are starting to drop, and the thought of leaves, pumpkins, and friends are in the air. But large fires of any kind can spell trouble for nearby buildings, homes and trees in Orlando. Putting safety first is vital if you are planning any kind of controlled burn.
What Are Some Safety Guidelines?
First and foremost, check your local weather and fire risk. You can go online and determine whether or not you are allowed to have a bonfire due to a fire risk. Never host one if there are high winds as sparks can spread further than you think. The last thing you want is fire damage to your Orlando home because a traveling spark landed on the roof. Other guidelines SERVPRO recommends include:
- Checking to verify it is legal to have a bonfire on the location of choice.
- Be prepared with a garden hose nearby to put out unwanted flames.
- Use dry, seasoned wood.
- Do not use treated wood and never throw things like furniture on the fire.
- Never burn aerosols, paint, or foam. They produce toxic fumes, are highly flammable, and can explode.
- Keep it small; a 5x5 area is a reasonable size to control.
- Put someone in charge of watching any children attending.
- When finished, rake the coals and charred wood as you douse with water.
- Spread the ashes and thoroughly saturate with water.
Have Fun, Stay Safe
Over 85% of wildfires in the U.S. are caused by people. Many of those are from bonfires and campfires. Take the necessary precautions to protect not only you and your home but the vicinity around you as well. It only takes a few stray sparks to set your home on fire.
At SERVPRO, we understand fire damage. We hope you never need us to come to your home. But if you do, our technicians are available around the clock. Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621 for expert fire damage service.
What Should You Do When Hurricanes Cause Flash Flooding for Orlando Homes?
9/18/2020 (Permalink)
Our professionals are available anytime that you need us by calling (407) 226-2621.
Having an emergency plan can ensure that the right mitigation and recovery steps get started promptly in your damaged Orlando house.
Hurricane season spans months, and this means that for this time, Orlando homes and businesses could always be at risk for rapidly developing powerful storm systems. With torrential rainfall and other devastating conditions, structural damage and flooding are both possibilities.
The objective of flood removal for Orlando homes is rarely for preserving the exposed materials and contents, mostly when natural flooding and flash flooding emergencies occur. The high probability of contamination often makes water removal a necessary action to protect elements of the house that have yet to be impacted by migrating loss effects.
What Should You Do When Flooding Begins in Your House?
As much as many homeowners might wish for a long list of actions that they can take when flooding occurs, that can make restoration efficient and keep costs to a minimum, but this is rarely the case. In most situations, the possible approaches that a property owner can take are often limited to retrieving their prized valuables and keepsakes and ensuring that utilities get shut off to the property if possible to reduce injury hazards for responding technicians. Last-minute actions include:
• Content Relocation
• Shut Off Utilities
• Vacate the Premises
What Pre-Mitigation Evaluation Data Gets Collected?
Evaluating the property as quickly and completely as possible prepares technicians for what to expect when we dispatch from our warehouse. The data collected and questions answered all play a role in the efficient recovery of the property after a flood.
Customer Concerns – After a flood, homeowners have their shortlist of priorities for responding technicians and contractors from our SERVPRO team. We also prioritize these requests to ease the stress of restoration.
Flood Damage – The current damages in a structure can have immediate ramifications for contents, occupants, and restoration obstacles. We thoroughly inspect the entire home after a flood to catalog and record all present compromises.
Contamination – Learning which contents and structural elements have become exposed to contaminants like bacterial and viral pathogens brought in with natural flooding, we can determine demolition and disinfection needs.
Content Damage and Inventory – Another action required before mitigation is choosing when to relocate contents in the path of migrating floodwater. By placing these items in a dry, safe location, we can prevent irreparable damage. When these items are already damaged, we can catalog these damages and inventory individual belongings before transporting them to our nearby SERVPRO facility.
What Tools Remove Standing Water and Trapped Water?
Flash flooding and natural flooding can require fast extraction to protect other areas of the house. Often direct exposure with potentially contaminated water can lead to a need for controlled demolition and replacement, though extraction often happens before this demolition is possible. Standing water presents a persistent threat to the property until the pooling gets eliminated from the residence's affected areas.
Carpet Wands – With how quickly carpeting can absorb moisture from standing water after a flood, many of these flooring materials must be removed and replaced. We have extraction tools like carpet wands to pull trapped water from the upper layer of the flooring system for uncontaminated areas.
Wet Vacuums – Wet vacuums are among the most versatile of the tools in our inventory, and this is due mainly to the versatility of these units and their portability. These vacuums can support multiple attachments to perform the extraction in challenging areas or trapped in materials.
Submersible Pumps – Using specific tools like submersible pumps, we can move hundreds of gallons an hour in residential applications. After natural flooding, submersible pumps need to have sufficient intake and discharge lines to accommodate the present debris and solids in the pooling.
How Much of the House Requires Demolition?
Initial demolition is often determined based on job scoping by our project manager. Oversaturation, warping, and deterioration are all deciding factors in which building materials require removal and discarding. A thorough inspection of the property is necessary after mitigation and restoration efforts have completed, as well. This evaluation determines what structural elements require replacement. During these recovery stages, our professionals can better understand the progress of cleaning and drying efforts, which can often indicate early on when further demolition or repairs might be necessary.
Flash flooding can be a quickly forming threat for your residence. With the force of these emergencies against your house's vulnerable points, or when saturation occurs with interior materials, our SERVPRO of South Orange County team can help. Our professionals are available anytime that you need us by calling (407) 226-2621.
Why Do I Need A Professional For Minor Water Damage Mitigation?
9/4/2020 (Permalink)
You want a team of experienced professionals working on your home's mitigation needs. Give us a call today for assistance.
Orlando Residents Looking To Save Time and Money On Water Damage Mitigation.
Savvy people living in Orlando are always looking for ways to save money. After all, it seems like the cost of living keeps growing, and it is essential to save dollars when you can.
DIY is a popular way to save some money. There are multiple blogs and videos online teaching you to do everything from sewing to home repairs. It is tempting for homeowners to turn their hands to all sorts of projects in Orlando, even water damage mitigation.
Can I tackle minor water damage problems myself?
Of course, it's easy to see why you need a professional if your home is flooded. However, you might decide to tackle smaller water problems such as:
- A leaky appliance
- A damp patch in the corner of the basement
- Wet cushions or upholstery due to a nearby leak or spill
- A water-damaged rug
However, SERVPRO recommends that you call the professional even for smaller jobs.
Why is it better to call the professionals?
Properly trained technicians can assess the situation and come up with the best solution. There are multiple reasons to call a trained team:
- They might spot things you missed, such as hidden water sources
- They know what to save and what to toss away
- They come with professional equipment and cleaning solutions that are more effective than home remedies
Why is professional equipment necessary?
The right equipment does two things: Gets better results, and uncovers hidden issues.
If you have a water-damaged rug or an upholstered item, we can use dehumidifiers and air movers to dry it faster than you could dry it alone. We also have air scrubbers to deodorize afterward and get rid of damp smells. In the event of water stains on delicate material, we have spot cleaning solutions that are highly targeted but still gentle.
Our technicians have a range of moisture monitoring tools, such as moisture probes and thermal-hygrometers. These let us see under rugs and behind furniture for a fuller picture of the water damage. If we spot hidden sources of moisture, we can take action to prevent further problems.
If you have water damage, no matter how small, we are here to help – We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
For help with water damage, call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621.

Why Do Thermal Foggers Get Used for Fire Odor Removal?
8/28/2020 (Permalink)
Even small fires produce smoke that travels throughout your home.
Lingering Smoke Odors in Your Orlando Home Can be Challenging to Remove Without the Premier Equipment Available to our SERVPRO Team
Smoke and burning odors are often among the most substantial post-fire obstacles present in Orlando'shomes and businesses. Failure to adequately address and neutralize these odor concerns can have homeowners dealing with recurrences of these noxious scents whenever temperature shifts cause drywall and other porous materials to become temporarily more permeable. Thermal fogging is often a suitable solution to address these concerns.
Despite widespread and overwhelming fire damage in Orlando homes, addressing odors is often one of the final steps to restoration and recovery. While hydroxyl generators and ozone machines have their place in odor removal and neutralization, thermal foggers are often most heavily used for several reasons:
- More Coverage – By creating a mist or vapor of a potent deodorization product, we can utilize a single machine to address a substantially sized area. The fog created can spread out from the handheld device and neutralize harsh odor molecules on contact.
- Highly Mobile – These lightweight tools are handheld and versatile in smaller spaces and can quickly sweep over the entire house.
- Addresses Embedded Odors – By creating a vapor from the deodorizing compound, high permeance materials like drywall and ceiling tiles can be accessible to the gaseous product to eliminate trapped odors in structural elements.
What Happens with Odor-Damaged Contents?
Your personal belongings can also hold on to harsh odors like smoke and burning. While it is desirable to restore these items on-site, we must often relocate them temporarily to our SERVPRO facility and run them through our ozone chamber to deodorize multiple contents simultaneously.
No matter how widespread and concentrated odor concerns might be after a fire, thermal fogging can often address the majority of these concerns. Let our SERVPRO of South Orange County team help you make fire losses, "Like it never even happened." Call us today at (407) 226-2621.

How Do I Get Water Out From Under My Dishwasher in Orlando?
8/27/2020 (Permalink)
“Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO technicians bring the expert skills and equipment to your Orlando home for any size water cleanup needed
A malfunctioning dishwasher in Orlando can dump several gallons of water on your kitchen floor in short order. That water will immediately follow the path of least resistance and run under cabinets, along walls and, in some cases, seep under the flooring. This can create more significant issues, such as:
• Loose tiles due to delamination
• Mold
• Foul musty odors
• The ruination of building materials
Do the Kitchen Cabinets Require Removal to Cleanup Water Damage From a Dishwasher?
The type of extraction actions needed against water damage in an Orlando home depends on the kind of materials used to construct the cabinets and if there are easy access points such as toe kicks to remove for water removal. SERVPRO technicians can remove the toe kicks and other appliances in the vicinity to extract the water. If the cabinets need to get pulled away from the wall as part of the restoration services, every attempt gets made to ready them for re-installation and reuse in the home post-mitigation.
Different Types of Kitchen Flooring Have Varying Outcomes After Water Exposure
While ceramic tile with a good seal on the grout has the best outcome after a water spill, it does not mean all other types of flooring do not have restoration potential. Vinyl and laminate floorboards that do not show signs of damage such as swelling or bending can frequently get dried in place as can hardwood floorboards. One of the determining factors remains whether or not seepage occurred under the floor covering. SERVPRO techs always work with saving the homeowner the cost of replacement whenever possible.
Water damage needs fast action as soon as possible, and SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621 is ready 24/7 to come to your home and do the necessary restoration services to lessen the damage to your home and contents.
What Does It All Mean?
8/5/2020 (Permalink)
Just like hurricanes with CAT1-CAT5 and tornadoes with EF0-EF5 classifications, water damages are no different. In fact, when it comes to assessing water damages there are 2 sets of classifications that have to be determined even before the mitigation process begins. First, the category must be determined. There are three categories of water damage. Category 1 is referred to as clean water, which means the water does not pose a health risk to humans. Examples include sink overflows or broken appliance supply lines. The second category is called Category 2 and is commonly referred to as gray water. This means that the water is now contaminated and may cause sickness if consumed. Examples of this are broken toilets or broken sump pumps. The final category is Category 3, knows as black water. This type of water is unsanitary and will cause sickness if ingested, like sewage water or standing water.
The second type classification is called Classes and there are 4 levels. Class 1 is the least harmful and it simply means that the affected materials absorb very little of the water. At this class mitigation is quick and easy. Class 2 means that there is a faster rate of absorption and materials like carpets and rugs may be damaged. Mitigation is a little difficult and require more resources for drying. Class 3 has the highest rate of absorption which means affected materials are completely soaked including floors and ceilings. Finally, Class 4 is considered a special class since it requires extensive water removal procedures and demolition of affected materials.
Safety Guidelines For After Your Water Damage
8/4/2020 (Permalink)
We are heading into peak storm season, and flooding is always a major concern whenever a storm approaches the state. Immediately following your water damage, there are some things you must do within the first twenty-four hours to ensure your home, and you and your family’s safety.
- Turn off the main from your fuse box. This will ensure that you are not in danger of standing in water with the electricity still on.
- Always inspect the home for structural damages like foundation cracks and holes.
- Contact all your utility companies if you suspect any of their lines are compromised.
- Clear tap water does not mean that it’s safe to consume so use bottled water or boil your water until you are advised that your tap water is once again safe.
- Food that has come into contact with flood waters must be thrown out.
These simple guidelines are meant to prepare you for a post flood event. Do not proceed with remediation. Let the experts at SERVPRO of South Orange County handle all your flood recovery needs.
To Get A Mold Inspection, Or To Not Get A Mold Inspection?
8/4/2020 (Permalink)
There is an urban myth that there is mold in every Florida home, therefore every home buyer calls for a mold inspection report to be done before moving in. Real Estate Agents also call on behalf of their out of state clients. When purchasing a property, make sure to pay special attention to hot spots like Bathrooms, especially near showers and toilets; Windows, for leaks from rainwater, sprinklers and condensation from the Florida humidity, can all cause mold to form.
Not all mold is visible mold. It can hide within HVAC ducts, behind kitchen cabinets and baseboards. In that instance it is recommended that you seek a mold inspection to help determine your course of action. If you do however see mold, give the skilled professionals at SERVPRO of South Orange County a call for a free assessment and estimate.
Is Lightning Really A Threat?
7/30/2020 (Permalink)
Florida is the lightning capital of the United States. And Central Florida has the added distinction of being known as Lightning Alley. Since lightning storms occur on average 100 days each year, it stands to reason that dangerous volts of power will occasionally strike your home or even you.
The National Weather Service says that if you can hear thunder, then you have the potential of being struck by lightning. The general rule of thumb is if you see lightning, count in seconds until you hear the thunder. If you hear thunder more than 30 seconds later then you are safe. However, if it’s less than 30 seconds later, you should seek shelter.
As summer temps rise and we dry out, brush fires can happen more often during lightning storms. It very normal to see signs along highways and areas with thick brushes that the local firefighter department will be conducing controlled burns. This is done in an effort to lessen the severity of the fires and better able to contain them.
If you live in Florida, it is important to understand your insurance policy in regard to lightning strikes causing a fire in your home. 2019 figures show that 19 percent of lightning related fires impact home structures. Lightning strikes that result in fires can occur in the following ways:
- Strikes to power lines near the home
- A direct strike to your home
- Lightning can strike a nearby object such as a tree
While we at SERVPRO of South Orange County cannot control the weather, rest assured that our highly trained technicians will always be able to provide top notch fire restoration services to you.
Beware of Scammers
7/30/2020 (Permalink)
Storm scammers are everywhere and tend to target distressed homeowners who have suffered damage, especially seniors. Below are some tips on what to look out for and how to protect yourself from those individuals.
- Scammers will pretend that they represent your insurance company and ask for personal information over the phone. Your insurance company will always notify you if a representative or contractor will be sent to your home.
- Never sign up with the first contractor to your home. Always get more than one estimate to make sure you do not end up being the victim of price gouging.
- Officials with government disaster assistance agencies do not call or text asking for financial information. Anyone who calls asking is an imposter.
- Contractors may call claiming to be partners with your insurance company. If this were to happen, do not provide any personal information.
- A major red flag is when a contractor says they will only charge you half of what the others will charge. Most times they will take your money and run.
SERVPRO of South Orange County is always available to help you navigate through your storm damage. Call us at (407) 226-2621 today
What Happens Next Now That Your Business Is Opened
7/24/2020 (Permalink)
It’s a fact that COVID-19 has changed our life and how we conduct business. The following are a few of the new guidelines when receiving customers:
- The wearing of masks are mandatory when entering a business
- Customers must maintain a social distance of 6ft
- The number of patrons allowed to a bar, gym or restaurant are limited to small quantities
- Magazines, books, TV remotes have all been removed from waiting areas
- Doctor’s offices now require patients to wait in the parking lot until they are ready to be seen
- Restaurants offering take out services request that you call from a designated parking spot before your meal is brought to your vehicle
Even with all those guidelines in place, all it takes is for one infected individual entering your business to cause an interruption of service for several days.
As we get back to our daily business, we now have a new appreciation for cleanliness. At SERVPRO of South Orange County, we’re committed in reassuring our local communities that we are here to help in finding our new normal way of life. SERVPRO offers different levels of cleaning services, from preventative disinfecting to sanitizing pathogens from known Covid-19 exposure. We are your best defense in maintaining a safe and clean environment for you and your customers.
A General Guide To Maintaining A Clean Office
7/24/2020 (Permalink)
No matter the size of your office, things can get messy. Employees can get busy and leave food in their trashcans overnight or even over the weekend. We have composed a few guidelines to keeping your office clean, clear of clutter and overall improvement of your restroom appearance.
Everyone can do their part. Make it an office practice that all employees remove their garbage before leaving for the day. Not only does it reduce odor but the practice also keeps pests away from the office space.
Each employee can keep their workspace tidy. This speaks for itself. If papers for files are removed from the cabinet be sure employees put them back in place. Not only does this create a tidy workspace but it also allows for efficiency as someone else may also need to use the folder and will now know where to find it.
Use the front entrance mats. Even though the employee’s shoes are dry doesn’t mean they aren’t dirty. Having mats placed at all entrances helps reduce dirt from being trekked through the office leaving noticeable footprints throughout.
Sometimes, hiring a cleaning company will help. Do not hesitate to seek the assistance of a professional cleaning company to help maintain office cleanliness. They can provide such services as keyboard and monitor dusting in addition to restroom cleaning.
A clean office creates an atmosphere of stability and a general feeling of wanting to go to work everyday.
Florida Tornadoes
7/10/2020 (Permalink)
The after effects of a Florida Tornado which caused water damage to the ceiling and personal belongings.
The mere mention of the word tornado and fear is immediately invoked in people, especially if you live in areas where they occur. Florida is no exception. While our tornadoes are not as destructive as those in the mid-west, the damage they cause can be just as devastating.
The general warnings to be safe during a tornado is to go the basement, avoid windows, get under something sturdy and do not stay in a mobile home. As Floridians we are at a great disadvantage. Our homes are not built with basements, our windows tend to be plentiful and mobile homes are a part of our landscape. The only protection we have is to find something sturdy to get beneath. That being said, we are almost left unprotected. When roofs tear apart during the violent winds and rain enters the home we become vulnerable.
It is for this very reason we at SERVPRO of South Orange County advise our customers to always be prepared and vigilant. We encourage having proper documentation of all belongings, verifying coverage with insurance carriers and most of all having easy access our phone number.
Trees! Are they our friends or enemies?
7/10/2020 (Permalink)
Trees are vital to our living. However, during a storm they can become quite the opposite. Branches can become projectiles and trees can topple over damaging roofs and even entire homes causing severe financial anxiety.
Here in Central Florida, winds can sometimes reach 50-55 mph and that is not even during Hurricane season. It is always a good idea to inspect the trees surrounding your property. If you encounter any questionable issues during your inspection, do make sure that they are addressed immediately. Dying or dead branches should always be removed and maintain regular pruning and trimming practices.
While we all enjoy being surrounded by trees and marveling at their beauty, we highly suggest proper upkeep of the trees near you. In the event that you sustain damage from loose branches, falling trees or any other water intrusion incidents do not hesitate to call us at SERVPRO of South Orange County. We are always here to assist in your time of need.
Commercial Properties Are Not Protected From A Water Damage
7/10/2020 (Permalink)
This entire office space was covered with water from a broken water heater
Most times when we hear of water damage we automatically think of residential properties. We envision broken sink pipes, leaking AC units, kids leaving the faucet running in the bathtub or even pets turning the tap on. However, commercial properties can be just as prone as residences.
Last month, SERVPRO of South Orange County was called upon to a water damage in a commercial building. The employees were gone for the weekend and returned on Monday to a significant amount of standing water in every office. The source was quickly identified as a broken water heater and water to the entire facility had to be shut off. We were onsite within an hour and began to work immediately in an effort to get the business up and running with minimal downtime. Given that they were just returning from being under lockdown due to the pandemic, time was of the essence.
In the end, SERVPRO of South Orange County was able to save all the affected materials and dried all the wet areas. We had to perform double extraction and even worked alongside the employees to move contents to a non-affected area while the air movers and dehumidifiers were placed. Drying was completed in less than four days and they were ready for minimal repairs thereafter.
When your business falls victim to an unexpected water damage, rest assured you can always rely on SERVPRO of South Orange County to get you back to normal operations.
Damaging Florida Summer Thunderstorms
7/9/2020 (Permalink)
As Florida residents, we know all too well what water damage looks like this time of year. While we tend to enjoy the evening lightning storms which can be quite spectacular, the sudden torrential downpours have the opposite effect. Water damage to your home can be not as obvious following a downpour. Some rooms may be seem perfect but the damage to others are unnoticeable until maybe it’s too late. Knowing how to identify areas early on can protect you and your investment from major water damage problems.
What to look for:
- Warping in wood materials near obvious water entry points such as windows and doors can indicate water. If you notice folding of your wood or laminate flooring call us immediately.
- Discolored spots in ceilings and on walls are also a sign of possible water damage.
- Foundation cracks may be an indication that there are water problems beneath the surface.
- Mold found in the home is a definite sign of moisture being present and should not be ignored.
Keep in mind that damage from water can be extensive and costly. Restoration specialists like us at SERVPRO of South Orange County can help prevent such incidents from occurring if called upon in a timely manner.
Content Move Out
6/4/2020 (Permalink)
Inventoried and carefully packed contents stored away properly until structure is ready for the move back.
When an insured experienced a fire loss, it was necessary to move the home’s contents to another location for storage, security and restoration of damaged contents. This process is also referred to as a pack out. When SERVPRO of South Orange County arrived to assess the damage, they pretested the items to determine their cleanability. They then made a complete inventory of all items being moved out of the structure on a room-to-room basis to ensure all items are detailed. Those items that are restorable will be carefully packed for removal. After the contents were packed and the furniture was labeled, the professionals from SERVPRO of South Orange County checked off each item on the inventory list as it was being loaded into the moving van for removal. Once removed, each item was carefully restored and stored until the structure was ready for the move back. When the structure had been restored, SERVPRO of South Orange County professionals returned the cleaned and restored contents to the insured.

Soot Damage to Vents and Ducts
6/2/2020 (Permalink)
Fire can cause soot damage to your air vents and ducts.
Following a fire, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals pay careful attention to the HVAC system and ductwork to prevent the spread of soot and to eradicate a potential source of lingering smoke odor. If the system was operational at the time the fire occurred, chances are good that the system, including air registers and HVAC units, should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent continued circulation of soot and odor-causing particles that may have contaminated the system.
Depending on the size of the fire and the methods used to extinguish it, the duct system may also have been compromised by water. In as little as 24-48 hours, this moisture can provide the catalyst for mold and mildew growth inside the duct system, further degrading indoor air quality. If the duct system has been contaminated with water, SERVPRO of South Orange County can help locate the moisture and remove it before serious air quality problems can develop.
Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County at 407-226-2621 to learn more about air duct system cleaning following a fire damage and the value of maintaining clean air duct systems year-round.
How to Stop a Grease Fire the Right Way
5/27/2020 (Permalink)
Never use water to extinguish a grease fire
Let’s say you’re frying your favorite food and suddenly you notice wisps of smoke escaping from the oil you’re using. Before you know it, there are flames leaping up from the pan. What should you do? Remember to NEVER use water to extinguish the fire. The key to putting out a grease fire is to suffocate it by cutting off any oxygen flow. Here are a few ways you can do this safely:
- Turn off the heat source.
- Cover with a metal baking sheet or lid.
- Pour salt or baking soda on the flame.
- Use a Class B fire extinguisher.
- As a last resort, call 911 and evacuate your home.
Finally Call SERVPRO of South Orange county for the fire restoration. 407-226-2621

Commercial Restoration Prepared

Making Commercial fire and water damage "Like it never even happened."
If your business suffered a small leak, would you know what to do? What if your business suffered a more severe water intrusion, such as a broken pipe or ruptured hot water heater, how do you respond? Have you considered how your business would respond if affected by water damage resulting from natural causes such as a flood, tornado or tropical storm? Would your organization be able to remain in business? Does your organization have a business continuity plan? Most businesses have an emergency exit plan in place, but few have a plan to get back into business following a disaster.
Every business should have an emergency/disaster plan in place. The Institute for Business and Home Safety reports at least one-fourth of all businesses that close as a result of a disaster never re-open. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, “A commitment to planning today will help support employees, customers, the community, the local economy and even the country. It also protects your business investment and gives your company a better chance for survival. How quickly your organization gets back to business following an emergency situation can greatly depend on the amount of planning and preparedness that takes place prior to an adverse event.
Both man-made and natural disasters usually strike without warning. Immediate response in a critical situation can save thousands of dollars in reduced structural and secondary damages and company downtime. It may also allow your company to resume normal business operations faster, helping eliminate the many problems associated with extended business interruptions. The quicker your company recovers, the better your chances for getting back to business as usual.
SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals can help your business or organization prepare now for the unexpected by offering a comprehensive disaster recovery/emergency preparedness plan. The Disaster Recovery Profile (DRP) records detailed company information and inventory ranging from machinery, electronic and computer equipment, furniture and fixtures and valuable documents and records of data regarding specific building and grounds information, contact information and response checklist. A customized company emergency response plan can be a proper preparedness and planning, you can increase your organization’s chance of survival in an emergency or disastrous situation. Our most commonly used pieces of equipment

Our most commonly used equipment loaded onto our SERVPRO green trucks ready for an emergency.
The SERVPRO of South Orange County takes pride in making sure our customers are helped to the best of our ability. To do this, our products and equipment need to be the best available so we can make sure the property and situations we encounter during disasters are able to be restored and brought to preloss conditions. Each machine and piece of equipment has a crucial role in the restoration process. Our technicians are trained to use each piece of equipment to its highest potential. Here are a few of our most commonly seen and used machines, and their purpose.
The SERVPRO® Equipment Department tests all equipment, including the truck mount, before putting the items in the product line. To provide the best service to our customers, we must know how the truck mount works, how to set up and maintain the unit, how to use it safely, how to clean the vehicle interior, unit, tools, hoses, and so forth as needed, and how to inspect all equipment and accessories for any damage, leaks, or wear.
DEHUMIDIFIERS: Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air after it has evaporated. Our technicians position dehumidifiers strategically in a water-damaged structure so the moist, humid air moves through the unit while dry, warm air is discharged from the unit circulating back into the wet areas. Did you know that dry air acts like a sponge to absorb moisture from wet materials? Since it does, we use the dehumidifiers especially because it provides a continual source of dry air to enhance the restoration process. Refrigerant dehumidifiers remove water vapor through condensation, and based on the specific job, we will use a small commercial refrigerant dehumidifier because it removes approximately 8 gallons of water per day from the atmosphere, while an extra-large commercial refrigerant could remove as much as 20 gallons per day.
AIR MOVERS: Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level and reduce drying time. These machines introduce airflow at the surface level and replace the highly saturated air with drier air to enhance evaporation. Our crew has gone through specific training on the science of drying to know how many air movers they will need and how to position them to create airflow across all wet surfaces. In some cases, when the lower portion of multiple walls are wet, involving wet drywall behind baseboards, enough air movers are positioned to create a vortex of circular airflow around the walls. Our technicians operate the air movers in several different positions, offering flexibility in how to direct the airflow with the best possible outcome.
PORTABLE EXTRACTORS: Extractors are used for cleaning carpets, cleaning upholstery, and removing water from floors after a water loss. An extractor has three major components: a heater, a pump, and a vacuum system. Our technicians use this machine for variable heat controlled cleaning, including to heat the rinse solutions to clean more effectively. The vacuum system and waste recovery tank remove soils and moisture from the surface and collects it in the tank. With this machine, we can expedite the removal of water and moisture from damaged materials and textiles to help restore it to preloss conditions. In doing this, the potential of having to replace materials or belongings is lowered.
There are many other machines and equipment accessories we use, but for today’s behind the scenes look we are proud to show you some our most commonly used pieces of equipment. These machines help us get your personal disaster back to preloss condition and to make it “Like it never even happened,” because SERVPRO of South Orange County is always here to help!

A few suggestions to help prepare for a storm
A few suggestions to help prepare for a storm:
- Take Pictures of your roof, your contents, your cars, the inside of your rooms, your artwork etc. on a DATED camera. Just in case you need it for insurance purposes.
READ your Insurance papers NOW and see what your coverage is. After the storm, you may want to revise it! - Gather all your important papers and objects: Insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, a list of phone numbers in your phone in case your phone runs out of battery, irreplaceable photos, papers, Think of what you would need if you couldn't get back into your house for a while.
- Get cash to have on hand.
- Keep your medications handy
- Fill your car with gas.
- If you aren't staying at home, let others know where you will be.
- Decide on a central contact person to reach out to, or a place to meet in case everyone gets separated.
- REMEMBER: Your safety and that of your loved ones comes FIRST. Don't try to be a HERO and go out during the storm or move objects that are too heavy.
- Fill water bottles 3/4 the way full, or fill Ziploc bags to put into the freezer to help keep frozen foods frozen. DON'T open the freezer if the power goes out...Let it stay cold!
- Try and avoid using candles for light... it could turn into a FIRE disaster! Use flashlights and lanterns.
- Bring in anything outdoors that could become a PROJECTILE. Even the smallest objects can do damage blowing in hurricane type winds.
- Be sure your pets are taken care of...they might be frightened during the storm.
- Move you boats to dry storage, or anchor them to the docks according to the rules of the marina.
- ONE more thing.... WRITE DOWN our number and PROGRAM it into your phone.

Fast response is IMPORTANT
1/29/2020 (Permalink)
Fast Response using the 2-4-8 steps
Who should be First on the Job?
To reduce claims costs in a fire or water damage situation, timely response is crucial. In most cases, the first person who makes contact with the customer be a restoration vendor rather than a contractor. A restoration vendor’s focus is restoration and a contractor’s focus is replacement. Most contractors do not have the expertise or training to determine if a surface can be restored to preloss condition. Since they can not make this determination, contractors may recommend replacement. Once an insured hears replacement, they are often not receptive to restoration.
SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals will demonstrate to the insured the restorability of an item. Our technicians never commit the insurance company to replacement. Even if it is obvious during pretesting that an item cannot be cleaned or restored, SERVPRO of South Orange County technicians will not imply the insurance company is responsible for replacement. We cannot interpret the policy. Adjusters adjust, SERVPRO of South Orange County cleans and restores. If it is determined that an item cannot be cleaned or restores, the adjuster will be contacted so that he/she can make a determination as to what the policy will allow.
By responding to claims quickly and professionally, SERVPRO of South Orange County professionals can save insurance companies money that may have been spent on replacement.
Move Out Aid
1/29/2020 (Permalink)
Move out aid in timely recovery
When an insured experience a fire loss, it is often necessary to move the home’s contents to another location for storage, security and restoration of damaged contents. This process is also referred to as a pack out.
Damage to a structure requiring a move out will involve the entire structure rather than be localized to one room. If only one room is affected, the contents may be moved to other rooms in the structure while repairs are being made instead of out of the house. In other occasions, it is necessary to move contents out of the entire structure. Once a move out is decided upon, SERVPRO of South Orange County follows a precise process to ensure that it is done correctly.
When arriving to assess the damage, SERVPRO of South Orange County professionals will pretest items to determine their cleanability. This process will help to determine what items are restorable and what items need to be deemed claim items. In all situations, our priority is getting your customer back into their home or office in a timely manner. SERVPRO of South Orange County professionals will make a complete inventory of all items being moved out of the structure on a room-to-room basis to ensure all items are detailed. Those items that are restorable will be carefully packed for removal.
Ask about our “Claims Items” inventory service. Call SERVPRO of South Orange County to get an accurate claim list fast.
After the contents are packed and the furniture is labeled, the professionals from SERVPRO will check off each item on the inventory list as it is being loaded into the moving can for removal.
Once removed, each item will be carefully restored and stored until the structure is ready for the move back. When the structure has been restored, SERVPRO of South Orange County professionals will return the cleaned and restored contents to the insured.
Inadequate Ventilation affects indoor air quality
1/28/2020 (Permalink)
Indoor air quality can be affected by so many different things.
A major factor in indoor air quality is inadequate ventilation. It should be noted that studies have shown almost half of the problems associated with poor indoor air quality are a result of poor ventilation. Therefore, attention has become focused on the need to clean the inside of the ventilation system.
How can this help?
- By reducing the contaminants in the environment Effective duct cleaning can remove most of the contaminants in the ventilation system.
- By reducing operating costs. Dirty ventilation systems are expensive ventilation systems. The restriction caused by dirt buildup inside the system increase the costs of operating the system.
- By reducing maintenance costs. Dirty ventilation systems will also increase floor, carpet, wall and ceiling cleaning. If the system is dirty, it will carry dirt into the indoor environment.
Your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional will select the best method for cleaning your insureds’ duct system should the need arise. To ensure the ducts are professionally cleaned, use the professional source: SERVPRO of South Orange County!

Move Outs Aid!!
9/12/2019 (Permalink)
When an insured experiences a fire loss, it is often necessary to move the home’s contents to another location for storage, security and restoration of damaged contents.

Most people don't actively plan on water damage in their homes or businesses, so deciding the proper way to restore a flood damaged property is important.
With so many aspects of life becoming increasingly more expensive by the day, it is no wonder that so many Americans choose to go the Do-It-Yourself route on an ever expanding wide array of tasks. While changing one's own oil or even doing one's own drywall job is commendable, there are still some jobs that are best left to the professionals. Water damage restoration and mitigation is one of them.
Each year, billions of dollars in property damage occur all over the United States due to flood damage. While some of these properties will inevitably be written off, the vast majority are completely salvageable. This means that, even though massive property damage was ultimately incurred, there absolutely never should have been any to begin with. All too often, this is the simple result of the property owner not recognizing the severity of the situation and taking the proper steps to remedy it.
One of those important steps is to properly mitigate damage right away.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment
Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.
- An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
- Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation
Water Extraction Equipment
Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.
- Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
- Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.
Drying Equipment
Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.
- High-speed air movers causes moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
- Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.
Odor Removal and Deodorization
Water and fire damage often cause powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.
- Air scrubbers
- Thermal foggers and deodorization agents
Hurricane Preparedness
6/13/2019 (Permalink)
Thank you to businessweek.com for these quick hurricane tips
June is the start of Hurricane Season. Below are some tips to follow whether you own a home, RV, boat, car or all of them! You can see a storm coming by the change in color of the sky (often greenish), large hail, low-flying clouds and a roar like a freight train.
- It is best to have a plan in place regarding where you are going to go when a hurricane hits. While they may be intriguing to watch, the best place is NOT outside. Your basement or under a set of stairs are great places to wait out the storm. If this is not available, the bottom floor of any building will work.
- Keep your car indoors if possible. Tape up the windows and door with tarps and keep away from any objects that could damage the car if they were to fall on top of it.
- During an emergency, gas stations will often be closed, so always make sure you have at least half a tank of gas to get away instantly
- Have enough supplies on hand to wait out 72 hours, just in case help cannot arrive right away. These supplies can also be stored in the trunk (items like a first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable foods, and medication can always stay there.)
- Make sure your car is in proper shape. Have a full tank of gas, wiper blades and tires are ready to go.
- Make sure your cell phone is charged and keep your charger with you.
- Avoid driving in deep waters
- For your boat, remove non-secure items, electronics, excess gear, valuable, and important documents.
- Make sure all openings are clear of debris
- Double all lines that are securing your boat to its securing space
- With your RV, do not drive it during the storm as it is more vulnerable to higher/stronger winds
- Make sure you have a full tank of gas, but empty holding tanks, turn off propane cylinders and cover the regulator.
- Make sure all documents are always in a waterproof bag and with you.
Life can be unpredictable but having plans in place help you with whatever may come. For more information, please check out these hurricane tips. As always, once the storm passes, contact SERVPRO of South Orange County to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Contents Cleaning and Restoration Save Money
6/4/2019 (Permalink)
Why SERVPRO of South Orange County? Because we can save your contents and your money!!
Following a fire damage, one of the toughest recovery challenges facing a property owner or manager is dealing with fire, smoke and soot-and likely water-damaged contents. SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals can help alleviate some of the stress involved and, in the process, help lower recovery costs by cleaning and restoring contents quickly and correctly.
Traditionally, replacement costs for contents are more expensive than cleanup and restoration. Many contractors simply resort to the “tear out the throw out” approach, which ultimately increases recovery costs. By carefully pretesting contents for restorability, SERVPRO of South Orange County can quickly help a property owner determine what to restore and what needs to be replaced.
Another advantage to utilizing your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional is Contents Claim Inventory Service. Utilizing CCIS, technicians can sort contents into three categories: salvageable, non-salvageable and questionable. An electronic inventory of every item allows a property owner to efficiently handle contents decisions. Should items need to be moved out while facility undergoes restoration, the CCIS inventory serves as a useful tracking tool for content management and movement.
In addition, should a fire damage exceed your commercial insurance deductible limit, the CCIS inventory can make filing and settling contents claims a less stressful and time consuming process.
Contact SERVPRO of S. Orange County Professional to discuss a detailed preloss inventory of your facility’s contents before a disaster strikes. Your detailed inventory will be delivered in a customizable electronic spreadsheet format that can be manipulated in Microsoft Excel.
Disaster and Recovery: Are you prepared?
6/3/2019 (Permalink)
A disaster is defined as any event which disables, interrupts, or adversely affects the ability to operate a business in a normal manner. The National Archives and Records Administration estimates that only 43 percent of businesses that suffer an incapacitating disaster are able to recover and resume operation. Of that 43 percent, only 29 percent are still in business two years later. Developing a solid working contingency plan is essential in the recovery efforts of your clients.
There are two major categories of disasters: internal (or man-made) disasters and natural disasters. Internal disasters include events such as fires, water damage from plumbing failure, major computer failure destroying data, phone system failure, and major electrical outages. Natural disasters include flooding rom streams and rivers, hurricane, ice storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, mudslides, and windstorms.
Experts estimate that only 5 percent of disasters affecting business caused by nature.
Consider a hazardous material incident in a factory close to your facility where a toxic gas is released requiring mandatory evacuation of everyone within a five-mile radius for weeks. What about a train derailment with explosives, fuel, or some kid of dangerous chemical? Civil unrest resulting in rioting and looting, or even terrorism as we are all too familiar with now, could interrupt your client’s operation just as easily as a natural disaster. Would you know how to react?
Be Prepared!
Before developing a contingency or preparedness plan, take some time with your client for self-examination. What can be done to prevent or at least mitigate the effects of a catastrophic loss to their business? There have been many losses that could have been prevented, or at least the severity of damages reduced, with proper planning. Consider where archived documents and data are being stored--hopefully not in an abandoned room in the basement. The key to recovery is preparedness. If you know the situation—who the players are and what the responsibilities are for each member of a response team—your clients will be able to better handle business resumption. The pre-planning phase is a must for disaster situations. This if the main ingredient for any resumption plan and must be tested for many situations to make sure a business has considered every conceivable disaster that could impact its operation. Identifying and eliminating hazards and risks is the best way to help in the prevention of a disaster. It is much easier to prevent the disaster than to recover after one has struck. Your clients should call the fire department and have an inspector examine their facility, especially if they are renting. Fire inspectors can help identify risks and make suggestions on how to correct potential problems. OSHA also offers a free consultation program and will inspect facilities for hazards and risks. OSHA and fire inspectors will help businesses select preventative measures. Another risk to consider includes the area where your client’s operation is located. Are there businesses that utilize hazardous elements in their production? Are your clients located near major railways or freeways? Some of the most innocent looking buildings could possibly be the most dangerous.
The geographical area a business is located in dictates, to some degree, the type of natural disaster which may strike. Knowing the type of natural disaster most likely to occur in your client’s area can help in planning and risk management.
Recovery Planning!
For business owners, developing mutual agreements with a multitude of vendors is essential as a routine part of a recovery plan. Creating relationships with different vendors before a loss occurs gives your client the ability to make arrangements and help them become familiar with each other’s services and situations before a disaster takes place. Mutual agreements become even more important for your client to be able to obtain services when everyone else needs emergency contractors, which is the case in regional disaster situation. Agreements with emergency service contractors should stipulate that your client has priority for services in restoring their facility and servicing their customers.
We understand how important it is to resumes business operations as quickly as possible following a catastrophic event. SERVPRO of South Orange County can provide services on a 24-hour basis. We work hand in hand with contingency planners, risk managers and insurance representatives to supply emergency response personnel in any situation, whether your client’s loss is large or small.
Don't Be Afraid of Vandalism!!
6/3/2019 (Permalink)
Vandalism is a fact that plagues home and car owners every year during Halloween season.
While timely action can minimize or prevent lasting damage, it is just as true that wrong or delayed action can increase it – sometimes beyond repair.
Following are a few facts about common vandalism occurrences and how they damage your insureds’ homes and property.
Eggs – Egg residue on paint, bricks or siding needs to be removed immediately. The protein in eggs digests and lightens paint. Brick is not only stains by eggs but, because brick is porous in nature, the egg can soak in and turn sour, thus causing odor problems.
Siding is affected in much the same way as painted wood and can be stained or discolored if the egg is not removed immediately.
Soap – Although soap itself is not damaging to paint, brick or fabric, damage often results from improper removal techniques. Scrapping or chipping at dried on soap will often cause damage to surface or pull in fabric.
Dry fire extinguisher residue – Some fire extinguisher residue can be corrosive, but many are just extremely difficult to remove because they are fine powdery residues that adhere to fabrics. Generally, standard vacuums cannot pick up all of the matter.
SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals are uniquely equipped to handle all of these vandalism situations. From pressure washing of egg and soap residue to thermal fogging to neutralize odors, SERVPRO of South Orange County is ready with the most up-to-date equipment and products.
Your SERVPRO of South Orange County technician is trained to understand the effects of each substance and how to minimize or eliminate the damage.
This Halloween do not be afraid of what vandals might do to your insureds’ property – the SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional is on-call 24-hours a day.
Emergency Tips for Vandalism Damage- The following emergency tips can help minimize the effects of vandalism damage and make the repair more successful.
Do:
- Hose or wash egg damage from building exterior as soon as possible.
- Blot freshly spilled food from carpets and fabrics with a dampened cloth or sponge (don’t over wet).
- Scrape and blot (don’t rub; it may cause damage to fibers).
- Vacuum glass particles from carpets and upholstery.
- Save containers which reveal the ingredients of spilled inks, cosmetics and paint.
DON’T:
- Attempt to remove ink, paint or cosmetic stains.
- Operate damaged lamps or appliances.
- Discard wood chips, broken pieces from furniture, porcelain or other art objects.
As professional cleaning and restoration expert, SERVPRO of South Orange County’s business is to save the insured’s property and possessions, while saving the insurance company time and money. Making your insureds aware of the steps to take when disasters occur can result in thousands of dollars saved, as well as creating satisfied customers for you.

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?
6/3/2019 (Permalink)
Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Microscopic mold spores naturally occur in our environment, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate the mold infestation immediately.
Apartment Fire in Kissimmee Orlando Area. Are You Covered?
5/31/2019 (Permalink)
Fire damage to your property can be devastating! At the end of April building in an apartment complex in the Kissimmee/Orlando FL area went up in flames.18 units were destroyed in the fire. SERVPRO of South Orange County FL has worked with many other apartment complexes who experienced similar circumstances. As costly as this will be to the Apartment complex to fix the structure that was burnt, it has been overwhelming for the renters who had to vacate their apartments. One common issue for the renters is having to leave property behind that in some cases are not salvageable.
Generally, apartment leases require renters to have liability insurance to cover damage to the structure of the apartments but don’t necessarily require you to have coverage for your personal contents. However, in most leasing agreements, there is generally wording that absolves the apartment complex of liability for your contents if you don’t have coverage for your contents. Now, they are still investigating the cause of the fire. If it is found to have been caused by the negligence of another renter, they can possibly go after the insurance policy of the renters at fault. But generally, the apartment complex has first priority to claims per the rental agreement. The cost to restore the building could be well over $500K and will most likely exhaust the claim coverage.
So insurance policies are sometimes complicated to understand. But there are some basics PolicyGenius.com suggests for renters insurance.
- $25,000 personal property damage coverage: Covers the cost of replacing or repairing your belongings if they’re damaged or stolen.
- $300,000 personal liability coverage: Covers legal costs from damage or injury that occurs in your apartment.
- $2,000 medical payment coverage: Covers medical expenses for anyone injured in your apartment.
- $10,000 loss of use coverage: Covers the cost of lodging, food, and more if your apartment becomes unlivable due to damage.
They also suggest having a deductible of around $500. Yes, you can get your insurance cheaper with a higher deductible, but remember, if something happens you have to make sure you are able to cover that deductible.
Indoor Air Quality
5/28/2019 (Permalink)
Indoor Air Quality is important because it refers to the air we breathe everyday in our homes and at the work place. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the amount of pollutants indoors can be 2 to 5 times higher than in the air outside. Indoor pollutants usually increase, however, after a fire, water or mold damage. One way to improve indoor air quality is through cleaning and restoration services provided by SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals.
Duct Inspection and Cleaning
Duct cleaning is often necessary following a fire or water damage situation. When contaminants such as soot enter a duct system, they must be cleaned out to restore the structure to preloss condition. Dirty ducts can be a source of re-soiling if they are not properly cleaned. Particles and contaminants in the system will be continually recirculated until they are removed from the system. After a fire, your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional can determine whether smoke has damaged your insureds’ HVAC system, if duct cleaning is needed and make recommendations about the best way to address any concerns.
Control Moisture and Mold Growth
Spend time educating your insureds that prompt response is key to preventing and controlling water damage and moisture problems. Moisture in a duct system can contribute to the growth of molds and other biological contaminants. Before a SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional arrives, occupants can follow these simple steps to help reduce the likelihood of costly water and mold claims.
- Correct any water leaks or standing water
- Properly maintain humidifiers
- Ensure proper ventilation of the area.
In many cases, your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals can restore the HVAC system and ductwork to previous condition. You know SERVPRO of South Orange County as an industry leader with a proven track record. You can be confident in the consistent quality service from a one-step vendor.

Prepare Ahead for a Fire!
5/23/2019 (Permalink)
House fires created over $264 Million in direct property damage from 2012 to 2016. In 2016 alone the state of Florida averaged 5.2 deaths and 38.5 injuries per 1000 residential structure fires (source). While the injury average was above the national average, the death rate was below. We’ll take injuries to deaths any day. Property damage can be restored or replaced. A life cannot be replaced. The best way to prevent deaths from a house fire is to have a plan. When a fire does take place in your home, saving a few seconds of reaction time could make a big difference in helping to get your family or friends out of danger quickly and safely.
Here are some tips you can use to create an effective fire evacuation plan!
- Plan for everyone. Account for the special needs of everyone in your household, especially young children and elderly household members who may not be as mobile. Children don’t always wake up when a smoke alarm sounds. Make sure someone is assigned as an escape buddy for small children, then choose a backup person in case the assigned person is not present at the time of the fire.
- Identify two ways out of the structure. This could include windows and doors. Make sure each escape route open easily so everyone can get outside. and install emergency release mechanisms on all security bars on doors or windows.
- Involve the children in planning. Have your children help create the fire evacuation plan. Draw a map of the home, then have the children mark two exit routes and the locations of smoke detectors. You can download a PDF that will help you draw out the plan here: https://www.nfpa.org//-/media/Files/Public-Education/Campaigns/Fire-Prevention-Week/FPW17/FPW17EscapePlanGrid.pdf
- Choose a meeting spot outside of the structure. Decide on a meeting place outside. It can be a neighbor’s house, mailbox or stop sign. It should be in front of the house so first responders are able to see you when they arrive. Make sure everyone knows not to go back into the house after you leave. Also, keep in mind that Florida’s weather tends to be finicky. You might want to have different meeting places depending on the type of weather at the time.
- Check smoke alarms. Make sure smoke detectors are properly placed and working. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing one in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping room and on each level of the home.
- Be visible. Make sure that your house number can be seen quickly from the street by first responders. You can put house numbers above the garage door, on a pillar next to the front door, or on the street curb directly in front of your house, for example.
- Respond immediately. Make sure everyone knows that if the smoke alarm sounds, they need to get out as quickly as possible.
- Always have a backup plan. If the planned exit routes are blocked by fire or fallen debris and it’s not possible to leave the house, close all doors between you and the fire. Place a towel, pillow, or something similar under the door and go to an exterior-facing window. Call the fire department to report your location.
- Share with everyone. Make sure the escape plan is readily accessible to guests as well. Go over the plan with everyone who lives in the house along with guests and overnight visitors.
- Practice your escape plan regularly. Practice and review the plan at least once per year.
Having an Emergency Ready Plan available on your phone is a good way to be prepared as well. The “Ready Plan” is a free app that can be downloaded to your Android or Apple mobile device that contains information such as where electrical and water shutoffs are, emergency and insurance contracts, where emergency vehicles are safe to park, etc. you can even store pictures of various items that have value for you in case you need that for an insurance claim. Look for our upcoming blog post that will show how easy it is to set up your Emergency Ready Plan. We’ll link to it here when it has been posted.
With a well-thought-out plan in place, you can be one step ahead of the unexpected. You may not have the time or ability to think things through. Don’t forget to periodically practice your escape plan and make sure visitors know how to access the plan.

How Does Duct Cleaning Help?
1/28/2019 (Permalink)
Move Outs Aid in Timely Recovery
9/6/2018 (Permalink)
When an insured experiences a fire loss, it is often necessary to move the home’s contents to another location for storage, security and restoration of damaged contents.

-The human species has always lived in the presence of mold.
-There are over 100,000+ species of mold identified. The unique flavor of bleu cheese is produced by mold.
-We are constantly exposed to thousands of different types of fungi in our everyday lives. Certain types of fungi tend to exist naturally in soils, plants, fruits and textiles.
-Exposure to these fungi in naturally occurring doses is generally not harmful to health.
-While the types and concentrations of fungi existing in the environment vary from one geographic region to another, the most common types are as follows: Aspergillus (most common), alternaria, bipolaris, Chaetomium, fusarium, penicillin, and paecilomyes.
Mold Needs the Right Environment to Grow
- Water, moisture or high humidity
- Food (any organic substance)
- The right temperature (generally 68*F-86*F, but some can grow in 30*F or colder)
- Lack of ventilation
- Mold presents greater challenges to young children, the elderly and other immune-suppressed people.

Restoration VS Replacement
4/17/2018 (Permalink)

Even a small fire CAN CAUSE ODORS in a structure FOR YEARS TO COME
1/12/2018 (Permalink)
Fire, smoke and soot damages in a structure can create unpleasant and permanent problems if not properly addressed. As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in those hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and result in periodically resurfacing odors. Unfortunately, such damages are often made more severe when unprepared property owner attempt to perform the cleanup themselves.

Excess H2O Can be a Formula for Trouble
1/12/2018 (Permalink)
Virtually everyone can agree that excess moisture inside a structure is not a good thing and studies show this condition can result in fungi growth if not addressed properly. In fact, visible mold growth can be detected by the naked eye in as little as 24-48 hours following a water damage.
The solution seems straightforward. Prevent excessive moisture in a facility before a mold or mildew problem develops. Of course, proper inspection and maintenance are very important keys to prevent water intrusions. Yet, some facilities are prone to the buildup of excessive moisture unrelated to roof leaks, poor roof drainage or other building envelope failures.
Your local SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional has the training and equipment to help identify moisture problems and offer solutions that can help lower the risk of future indoor air quality issues related to fungi growth. In addition to measuring the moisture content in the air, which can identify humidity problems inside a facility, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals can potentially help locate hidden pockets of moisture inside walls, beneath flooring or within HVAC systems that have resulted from undetected water damages.
Tips for preventing mold problems:
- Keep the humidity level between 0 to 60 percent.
- Use cleaning products with proven mold killing properties.
- Regularly inspect plumbing and appliances for leaks.
- Keep gutters and drains clear of debris.
- Inspect the roof, windows and other areas where water might enter the building, and perform necessary maintenance.
- Respond to all water intrusions immediately.
- Contact your local SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional 407-226-2621 for assistance after a water damage or if you discover mold in your building.
Choosing the right service provider for your commercial building
1/12/2018 (Permalink)
When a disaster strikes, and it is time to call in emergency service providers capable of helping you get back into your facility faster and easier, will they be available? This question is vitally important for property managers wishing to prepare an Emergency Response Profile (ERP) suitable for handling real life situations.
Fire and water damages, for instance, never occur at convenient times. Consider the impact a sewer backup occurring at 1:00 a.m. would have on you, your tenants and customers. Unless a service provider offers 24-hour emergency service, there is little chance the facility will be fully operational the next business day.
Instead of tackling the cleanup immediately, you are then resigned to waiting until “normal business hours” just to make contact with a service provider. Such delays can be quite costly in terms of business interruption and likelihood of secondary water damages to the facility.
SERVPRO, with over 35 years of service experience handling fire and water cleanup and restoration for the insurance industry, as well as directly for commercial and residential consumers, understands the urgency in responding to disaster situations as soon as possible. All SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals are committed to providing 24-hour emergency fire and water restoration services.
Under normal circumstances, a SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional is onsite at your facility within four hours of receiving your call. A uniformed, trained and well-equiped technician can quickly access the situation and begin emergency mitigation procedures to protect the facility and contents from secondary damages.
If you are considering developing an Emergency Response Profile for a facility, rely on service provider offering 24-hour emergency service. For assistance developing an ERP, contact your local SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional, who can provide you with advice and help you collect the information you will need should a disaster situation occur in your facility.
General Water Damage Tips
12/20/2017 (Permalink)
- A simple leak test can ensure leaks are not going undetected. To check for hidden leaks, record the current water meter readings. Turn off all faucets and appliances using water and do not flush toilets for one hour. After an hour of water shut off, record the water meter reading again. If the meter reading changed while no water was being used, a leaking pipe may to blame.
- Frequently check pipes under sinks for signs of water leaks.
- Know where the main water shut-off valve is located and ensure it is operational.
- Check for leaks and signs of water intrusion around water structures, pipes, windows and doors.
- Check potential problem spots for moldy odors, discoloration or dampness.
- Install drip pans and drains where accessible.
- Respond immediately if water intrusion occurs in order to minimize damage and loss.
Be Prepared- Damage to commercial buildings
12/20/2017 (Permalink)
When fire or water disasters strike, forcing occupants to evacuate a building, exit signs and even strategically posted maps serve as reminders that an emergency exit plan is in place. However, how many commercial facilities have a well-thought out plan to help get everyone back into the building following a disaster?
Property management should be concerned with how will they be able to get order restored and resume full operations as quickly and painlessly as possible once the fire has been extinguished or the source of the invading water has been addressed.
Your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional can assist commercial property management teams in developing am Emergency Response Profile (ERP), a vital component of an overall Contingency Plan for a facility. Then objective is to collect the necessary management team and facility information and identify services providers capable of responding to disaster situations quickly – ideally selecting providers offering 24-hour emergency service.
By compiling an ERP, management team members will not have to waster valuable time trying to locate providers for specific emergency needs and can provide vendors with the necessary facility information to help ensure faster recovery and less business interruption.
With over 35 years of experience in fire and water cleanup and restoration, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals offer 24-hour emergency service. Normally within just a few hours of receiving your initial call, a trained and well-equipped SERVPRO of South Orange County can be on site in your facility to begin emergency mitigation services.
Effectively drying water damaged structure
12/20/2017 (Permalink)
While every water damage situation is different, requiring different approaches and equipment, generally SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals will use air movers and dehumidifiers as needed to help speed up the drying process.
The number of air movers used depends on the surfaces (walls, ceiling, under cabinets, etc.) being dried and the configuration of the structure. For example, if only the floor is wet, and the damage is confined to one large room, fewer air movers would likely be required. Extra air movers would be required for additional wet surfaces such as walls and ceilings. In an Insured’s home with several smaller rooms damaged by water, more air movers would be needed to circulate the wet air to the dehumidifier and the dry air back to the wet areas.
Dehumidifier requirements are based on both the nature of the environment being dried and the capacity of the dehumidifier. The nature of the environment is determined by the amount of porous and absorbent materials present, including carpet, clothing, upholstered furniture, and unfinished wood. The more absorbent materials present, the more moisture present, increasing the need for dehumidification. Dehumidifier capacity is measured in two ways: the number of gallons of water removed in 24 hours under ideal temperature and humidity situations and the number of cubic feet per minute of air the dehumidifier conditions.
While this is a general overview of how SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals determine when and how many air movers and dehumidifiers to use in a water damage situation, every loss situation must be evaluated and monitored to help guarantee fast, thorough drying. Water trapped inside walls, small rooms making it difficult to establish air circulation, long term exposure, the amount of absorbent materials present, the size of the dehumidifier and many other variables must be taken into account.
The real measure of whether a balanced drying system has been established is the repines of structure and contents. Your local SERVPRO of South Orange County team is trained and equipped to make sure moisture levels inside an Insured’s home or office are effectively being reduced.
When commercial emergency response is most important
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
The development of a thorough Emergency Response Profile (ERP) for a facility should include selecting service providers offering 24-hour emergency response whenever possible. The reasoning behind this goal is simple.
Consider this, a fire damage occurs in your facility at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning? Without a 24-hour emergency service provider available, you might have to wait until 8:00 a.m. or later just to begin your search for cleanup and restoration assistance. At best, maybe a provider would be able to arrive sometime shortly after 9:00 a.m. In that time, corrosive and odorous soot and the water used to extinguish the fire have begun to cause secondary damage to the structure and contents, complicating the cleanup process. In addition, your facility is not fully operational at the start of the business day, causing potential problems for tenants, customers and anyone depending on your facility being open.
Your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional knows that a fire occurs somewhere in the somewhere in the U.S. every 18 seconds. But the only fire that really matters to you is the one that occurs in your building. Nearly four decades of experience have shown that emergency response and mitigation services can help reduce recovery costs and business
SERVPRO of South Orange County l is committed to 24-hour emergency response, including a dedication to SERVPROS’s 1-4-8 Service Response Guidelines. Under normal circumstances, a SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional will contact you or your facility representative within one hour of notice of loss to arrange for service. Within four hours, a trained, uniformed and fully-equipped technician will arrive to begin mitigation services, such as water extraction, to help prevent further damage to your assets. A detailed scope of the project will then be communicated to you or your chosen representative within eight business hours, enabling you to make faster, more informed decisions.
Make it a priority to select service providers who can deliver 24-hour service to help ensure your facility can recover quickly from potential perils. Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County (407)226-2621 P to learn more about fire and water cleanup and restoration services and for help in developing your ERP.

Whether it’s your industrial carpet or your customer’s hardwood floor that has been soaked, the science beyond drying can be a tricky thing. There’s the temperature, a relative humidity and the cubic feet of the damaged area to consider – and that’s before you figure in the type of carpet, hardwood or subflooring in the structure, along with a number of other potential issues. Backed by more than 39 years of experience in the restoration business, SERVPRO of South Orange County Technicians will help put your worries at ease, because they understand the science of drying.

Where did the water damage come from?
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
Water can enter and damage a structure from numerous sources. The three major types of water are clean water, gray water and black water, which might include external flooding or sewage back-up.
Clean water is just that – it does not contain waste products. Sources of clean water include burst pipes, defective appliances and rain or snow when a structure has a leaky or damaged roof. The water generated by natural disasters such as rain and heavy snow is usually relatively clean and presents few health problems.
Gray water is water that has been used and carries waste products, but does not include human waste. Examples include and overflowing washing machine or dishwasher which dumps water on the floor, or a shower stall or sink which is overflowing. This type of water contains waste products, but generally does not present the hazard of spreading disease. Water used to control structural fires also carries waste, but does not normally present a danger of spreading diseases.
Black water that contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary. Floods are an example of black water and can cause the most severe damage to structures and their contents, and they can also spread disease-causing organisms. Floods can completely inundate a structure. Flood waters carry silt, mud and debris of every imaginable type. Special precautions must be taken to protect workers from disease-carrying residues.
Because of the potential for such large amounts of water, and the possibility that it may be days or even weeks before the flood waters recede, structural damage is very likely.
Sewage back-up also has the potential of spreading disease. It can be as simple as a commode overflow, or can it can be a massive disaster. Municipal sewage lines can become plugged and force large amounts of sewage up through all drains connected to the system.
SERVPRO of South Orange County has the experience, knowledge, equipment and products to handle any size and any type of water damage.
EXTREME caution needed when dealing with contaminated water damage
8/29/2017 (Permalink)
Any water damage in your facility is bad. Especially when the water contains potentially harmful bacteria that can affect the health of occupants and the value of your property. Toilet overflows, sewage backups and other black water intrusions are more than nasty, smelly messes; these biohazardous damages also introduce harmful microorganisms into your building, as well as the moisture necessary to ensure their continues growth.
Sewage damage poses serious health risks to anyone exposed to the contaminated water. The danger arises from various harmful substances, including parasites that can cause intestinal disease. Some common risks are Hepatitis A, E-coli and Salmonella. This grossly unsanitary water is often referred to as “black water.” Building occupants should practice precautionary and safety measures at all times when dealing with the threat of black water.
Safety Tips for Building Occupants
- DO:
- Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.
- DON’T:
- Spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas and by tracking the contamination elsewhere.
- Turn on the HVAC system if impacted by water, The HVAC system could spread contaminated air to other parts of the building.
- Use household fans to dry the structure which could possibly spread contaminants.
- Use products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if they have been exposed to the contaminated areas.

Content Cleaning and Restoration Saves Money
8/15/2017 (Permalink)
Another advantage to utilizing SERVPRO of South Orange County is Contents Claim Inventory Service.
Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals at (407)226-2621 to discuss a detailed preloss inventory of your facility’s contents before a disaster strikes. Your detailed inventory will be delivered in a customizable electronic spreadsheet format that can be manipulated in Microsoft Excel.

Insurance and Water Damage
8/15/2017 (Permalink)
According to the chart from Insurance Services Offices, water damage and freezing have increased and caused 60-80 percent of losses in 2003. An article appearing in the American Association of Insurance services magazine, Viewpoint, reports that the recent rise in water-related claims may claims may be due to modern building practices and increased homeowner luxuries. For example, it is not uncommon to find a full bath located on a n upper floor of a current-day home. In fact, second or third story lavatories are standard in many of today’s modern floor plans. This was not the case in floor plans of the past, however, where multiple baths were rarely found.
Some larger contemporary homes require multiple water heaters due to the size of the home and an increased amount of water fixtures. When a home requires multiple water heaters, one water heater, one water heater unit will often be placed in the attic to save space in storage or utility areas while still allowing rapid water distribution throughout the home. Water fixtures such as sinks, tubs, showers and water heaters located in an upper floor of the home. Water fixtures such as sinks, tubs, showers and water heaters located in an upper floor of the home can cause extensive damage if a simple leak develops.
The extent of damage is only amplified if the problem is more sever, such as a broken pipe or ruptured hot water heater. The increasing amount and location of water fixtures in recently constructed homes are two possible problems relating to rising water damage claims. The rapid growth and construction of apartment and condominium complexes, where several stories of living quarters, kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms are connected to surrounding units, also contribute to increased water claims.
In addition to increased amenities posing possible water predicaments in contemporary homes, modern building supplies and practices may also be part of the problem. As awareness and importance of energy conversation increases, building practices are becoming more energy efficient, which may actually hinder the drying process by restriction airflow. The Association of Insurance Services article, “Getting Soaked” notes current building materials are not necessarily effective in keeping unwanted water out of housing structures or in permitting the structure to dry properly once water intrusion has occurred.
Precaution, routine inspection and preventative maintenance can help minimize water damage. Below are some general tips to help reduce extensive water damage. Overcoming Fire Damages with Proper Planning
4/12/2017 (Permalink)
A fire can generate tremendous amounts of heat, smoke, and soot throughout a commercial facility, even when the flames are concentrated in a small area. As the heat and smoke move, damage to the structure and contents can make it impossible to immediately resume normal business activities. For unprepared property owners, such a closure makes recovery even more difficult.
For decades, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals have been providing fire and water cleanup and restoration service. Experience has shown that a proper Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP), including an Emergency Response Profile (ERP), can not only mean the difference between survival and failure, but can also reduce time and recovery costs.
A thorough ERP identifies emergency response providers capable of addressing disaster situations quickly. In the case of a fire damage, SERVPRO of South Orange County would be an essential ERP service provider. Offering 24-hour emergency service, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals can normally be onsite prepared to begin emergency mitigation services in as little as four hours.

Mishandled Fire Damages Can Cause Lingering Problems- Orlando, Fl
2/2/2017 (Permalink)
Even when a fire is small, the smoke and soot damage that results can be more than a little disruptive. Depending on the type of structure and contents affected, smoke and soot can cause both immediate damage and, if not handles properly, lingering problems that can last for years.
As smoke travels throughout a structure, soot settles out of the air, depositing on surfaces as well as inside contents and tough to reach areas – virtually anywhere air can travel. Soot can be corrosive, quickly deteriorating metal fixtures and electronics, and needs to be handled quickly and properly to help limit secondary damages. Unnecessary movement inside a smoke-damaged area can ground soot particles deeper into carpet or upholstered furniture or even smear wet soot particles, normally found when plastics were among the items burnt by the fire, making the cleanup even more challenging. When property owners attempt to clean up soot, they may succeed in wiping away the surface soot. However, most lack the expertise, equipment, and products necessary to remove the soot trapped out of view, or in difficult to see, much less reach, areas including inside the HVAC system and ductwork.
There is little wonder that smoke odors continue to persist in such cases. Experience has shown that often, as weather conditions change, smoke odors seem to appear or disappear in accordance with the HVAC system. And this is just one source of smoke odor missed by the average property owner.
A trained, uniformed SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional will respond to a fire cleanup call ready to identify the source of fire-related odors, and is equipped to clean and deodorize a structure thoroughly. SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals work to make it "Like it never even happened."
Please call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407)226-2621 for all your fire damage needs! We are always here to help.
Property Managers- CHOOSING THE RIGHT EMERGENCY SERVICE PROVIDER
2/2/2017 (Permalink)
When a disaster strikes and it is time to call in emergency service providers capable of helping you get back into your facility faster and easier, will they be available? This question is vitally important for property managers wishing to prepare an Emergency Response Profile (ERP) suitable for handling real life situations.
Fire and water damages, for instance, never occur at convenient times. Consider the impact a sewer backup occurring at 1:00 a.m. would have on you, your tenants and customers. Unless a service provider offers 24-hour emergency service, there is little chance the facility will be fully operational the next business day.
Instead of tackling the cleanup immediately, you are then resigned to waiting until “normal business hours” just to contact a service provider. Such delays can be quite costly in terms of business interruption and the likelihood of secondary water damages to the facility.
SERVPRO, with over 35 years of service experience handling fire and water cleanup and restoration for the insurance industry, as well as directly for commercial and residential consumers, understands the urgency in responding to disaster situations as soon as possible. All SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals are committed to providing 24-hour emergency fire and water cleanup and restoration services.
Under normal circumstances, a SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional is on-site at your facility within four hours of receiving your call. A uniformed, trained and well equipped technician can quickly assess the situation and begin emergency mitigation procedures to protect the facility and contents from secondary damages.
If you are considering developing an Emergency Response Profile for a facility, rely on service providers offering 24-hour emergency service. For assistance developing ERP, contact SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional (407)226-2621, who can provide you with advice and help you collect the information you will need should a disaster situation occur in your facility.
Fire Damages and the HVAC System
11/16/2016 (Permalink)
Following a fire, SERVPRO of South Orange County Professionals pay careful attention to the HVAC system and ductwork to prevent the spread of soot and to eradicate a potential source of lingering smoke odor. If the system was operational at the time the fire occurred, chances are good that the system, including air registers and HVAC units, should be thorough cleaned to prevent continued circulation of soot and odor-causing particles that may have contaminated the system.
Depending on the size of the fire and the methods used to extinguish it, the duct system may also have been compromised by water. In as little as 24-48 hours, this moisture can provide the catalyst for mold and mildew growth inside the duct system, further degrading indoor air quality. If the duct system has been contaminated with water, your SERVPRO of South Orange County Professional can help locate the moisture and remove it before serious air quality problems can develop.
Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407)226-2621 to learn more about air duct system cleaning following a fire damage and the value of maintaining clean air duct systems year-round.

ARE YOU PREPARED?
A few suggestions to help prepare for a storm:
- Take Pictures of your roof, your contents, your cars, the inside of your rooms, your artwork etc.on a DATED camera. Just in case you need it for insurance purposes.
READ your Insurance papers NOW, and see what your coverage is. After the storm, you may want to revise it! - Gather all your important papers and objects: Insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, a list of phone numbers in your phone incase your phone runs out of battery, irreplaceable photos, papers, Think of what you would need if you couldn't get back into your house for awhile.
- Get cash to have on hand.
- Keep you medications handy
- Fill your car with gas.
- If you aren't staying at home, let others know where you will be.
- Decide on a central contact person to reach out to, or a place to meet in case everyone gets separated.
- REMEMBER: Your safety and that of your loved ones comes FIRST. Don't try to be a HERO and go out during the storm, or move objects that are too heavy.

Mold Prevention Knows No Season
10/4/2016 (Permalink)
Maintaining a healthy indoor environment in a commercial facility is a year-round endeavor. While it is true that every building has some mold spores present, unhealthy levels can quickly arise under the right circumstances – usually within 24-48 hours when excess moisture is present.
Periodic inspection and proper maintenance of building envelope, plumbing system and the HVAC system to detect potential problems in advance and to prevent moisture from entering the facility is very important. This is especially true during the fall and winter months when the weather puts extra pressure on these systems and most indoor environments are primed for mild growth (i.e., warmer temperature settings, less air flow to help keep humidity levels under control, etc.) Even in buildings where maintaining a warm indoor environment is a non-issue, indoor air quality can still be impacted by mold species that thrive in cooler conditions.
SERVPRO of South Orange County is equipped with the proper equipment to help identify indoor air quality issues, including improper humidity levels, contaminated ductwork systems and moisture that may have accumulated behind walls or under flooring due to an undetected roof or plumbing leak.
Call us for helpful information on how to prevent indoor air quality issues as part of your Emergency Response Profile development.

Rapid Response Recovery Time
Why should I choose a professional restoration company for water intrusion/ damage?
- Homeowners should not risk doing the work themselves as there may hidden water or moisture that may go undetected to the untrained eye. Taking into account that mold growth can occur in as little as 24-48 hours in the presence of moisture, undetected water damage can pose long term problems if not properly handled.
- Due to the potential hazards associated with water-related damage, moisture and water should be handled by properly trained and equipped professionals to ensure complete and necessary drying to prevent future harm, extensive structural damage and possible contamination.
- Improper cleanup could hinder property resale value.
- Professional restoration companies have essential tools and techniques to measure moisture in the area to ensure proper and complete drying in a timely manner.
- Water technicians should be fully aware of water or moisture-related characteristics to locate leaks or water damaged areas that may otherwise go unnoticed.
- Homes and other properties are large and often expensive assets. Why run the risks associated with improper drying, deodorizing and disinfecting which can lead to potential secondary structural damage? Help protect your property’s value by calling upon a Professional.
- According to a “Residential Water Claims” article on the International Risk Management Institute website, restoration companies and contractors are often an asset in a water claim situation. The article states, “a major concern in today’s insurance climate is the problem of mold and mildew. When most restoration companies deal with water claims, every effort is made to prevent any problem with mold and mildew.” Restoration companies are in the business of salvaging rather than replacing, which could serve as a benefit to the insurance company.

35,000 DOWNTOWN ORLANDO OFFICE FLOOD HANDLED PROMPTLY BY SERVPRO OF SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY
When a water damage is initially discovered, building occupants and property managers may be both surprised and perplexed. Their normal day-to-day functions can be disrupted, resulting in business downtime. Property owners and building occupants are often consumed with multiple questions and uncertainty as they evaluate the situation and consider the next step of action. “What do I do?” and “Who do I call?” are two commonly asked questions following a water damage discovery.
If your business or property suffers a water loss, immediately contact SERVPRO of South Orange County, Research indicated, “The arrival of a specializing cleanup company signals the start of the solution that will help lead to resolution.” Professional drying and prompt action by experienced restorers following a water intrusion can make a big difference in mitigating structural damage and minimizing secondary damages. A Claims Magazine article entitled “Solving the Mold Challenge Before it Grows” states, “Speed of response by service providers and first responders is the most important component, and one that sets the tone for the steps that follow. Of restoration is to be an option, expeditious and proper removal and treatment of affected items essential.”
SERVPRO of South Orange County understand the importance of timely response. When dealing with a water intrusion, time can be the differentiator between primary, secondary and permanent damage. The amount of time materials remain wet can also determine if they are restorable or must be replaced. Water impacts material immediately and the damage increases as time passes. For example, wood absorbs moisture quickly, which can result in swelling or staining; however, prompt splitting and warping. The professional restorer focuses on eliminating water and moisture quickly to prevent additional damage.
Upon arrival, SERVPRO of South Orange Countys professional team will assess the situation to determine the extent of the damage, A technician will inspect all building components for water and moisture. Although water may only be visible in one room, it is very possible that surrounding areas have also been affected, Water can invade floors, ceilings and walls to find the lowest point within the structure. Water can seep through pinhole crevices and cracks in floors and walls travelling further down into the building. Surfaces such as wood, drywall and carpet pull water away from plain sight and into the interiors of the structure. Inspecting all building components and measuring the moisture level of not only the visibly affected area but also all surrounding areas helps ensure secondary or permanent damage does not occur because wet materials or building components were overlooked.
Knowledge, skill and equipment are all key elements in effective water removal and moisture damage. SERVPRO of South Orange County Technicians apply their industry knowledge, training and experience to measure the extent of moisture saturation and offer proper drying, deodorizing, and disinfecting for areas flooded or damaged by water.
Let SERVPRO of South Orange County assist you with all your commercial and residential needs. We are available 24 hours a day,7 days, a week 365 days a year. We can be reached at (407) 226-2621
Water Damage and Sewage Damage- Orlando, Fl
7/27/2016 (Permalink)
Sewage Backup-Orlando, Fl
"Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.
More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to pre-loss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur."
It is also important to determine the source so that an appropriate response can be applied. Many times the response can be shaped by determining the source of the intrusion. If the source of the damage is from a flood or other clean water source the response may be much less destructive and more materials will be able to be saved. However, if the source is determined to be a contaminated source such as a sewage back up, even if the water appears clean and clear it is often times still very much contaminated as well.
"Sewage is one of the most dangerous substances to enter homes or buildings. It contains fungi, bacteria and viruses, many of which are disease-causing. Unfortunately, many people fail to understand the hazards that sewage presents, particularly for the very young or very old, or for those with compromised immune systems or respiratory problems.
The IICRC complied guidelines for professional sewage clean-up called the Standard for Water Damage Restoration (S500)."
Once you have determined the source a response can be chosen. The response generally falls under 2 different categories: Flood clean-up or Sewage clean-up.
Below are some tips suggested by the IICRC for Water Clean-up:
Act quickly
The severity of damage escalates the longer water sits and building components and contents stay wet, so time is of the essence in the aftermath of a flood. In fact, mold will grow within 48-72 hours, so aim to start removing water and drying the environment within 48 hours.
Have a list of professionals on hand to call, and understand your insurance policy, as some only cover mold damage up to a certain amount, while others don’t provide any reimbursement for mold.
Ventilate affected areas to prevent mold growth
Assess damage to items and materials
Assess the type of water absorbed by items, such as rainwater, water from broken pipes, contaminated river water or bacteria-filled sewage.
There are ways to salvage specialty items but the decision on whether to save or trash an item will vary depending on the dollar and sentimental value to the owner.
It may not be worthwhile to salvage drywall, carpets and pads, mattresses, pillows, box springs and particleboard. On the other hand, it might be worthwhile to restore costly Persian rugs, leather couches and antiques or heirlooms. Wet clothing and many household fabrics may be salvageable through machine washing, and a 10-minute soak in detergent and hot water, to remove contamination and stains.
The IICRC strongly recommends that in water damages where there are contaminants present (e.g., bacteria, sewage, mold) or where small children or immune-compromised individuals are present that an inspection be conducted by an appropriately trained restorer and remediator.
Expose pockets of saturation
Hidden and concealed pockets of saturation need to be opened for cleaning and drying.
Layers between building materials hold water that must be discovered and removed or dried.
On walls, find the water line and inspect at least a foot beyond it to make sure all damage, wet materials and mold are discovered. Remove and discard the damaged drywall and wet wall insulation.
Wood base trim and hardwood can also be saved with the right equipment and the right circumstances if they can be accessed and completely dried on both sides.
Remember to investigate concealed cavities such as behind walls, in mechanical spaces, under cabinets and furniture, and in crawl spaces.
Conduct a thorough cleaning
Durable, nonporous or semi-porous materials, such as studs and joists, hardwood flooring and vinyl products, can usually be cleaned with common cleaning products or specialized products with detergents.
During cleaning, take care to protect areas that are unaffected by the water or mold.
After a thorough cleaning of salvageable materials, a disinfectant solution may need to be applied in case of harmful bacteria from sewage, river water debris or even standing water that has gone bad.
Professionals like water restoration and mold remediation contractors and indoor environmental professionals can help you decide what is best for your situation.
Once you’ve cleaned the wet materials, conduct another round of cleaning. If you choose to vacuum, use a HEPA-filter vacuum to remove allergens, fine dust and spores.

FAULTY STUCCO CAUSING WATER DAMAGE AND MOLD DAMAGE- Orlando, Fl
3/9/2016 (Permalink)
Your home is a big investment. Unfortunately in Florida many home less than 10 years old are rotting away and losing their value FAST.
Most Florida homes have stucco exteriors. This is basically a layer of cement designed to keep moisture from entering your home. The problem is when the stucco is applied quickly or incorrectly eventually cracks form causing water damage in the home, ultimately leading to mold issues. Most home structures consist of wood framing, at least on the second floor which will rot away once water enters thru the cracks in the stucco. Believe it or not a small hair line crack in your stucco can cause gallons of water to pour into your home during a heavy rain.
This issue usually goes unnoticed for years until the homeowner has a huge water damage and mold issue on their hands. A lot of homes built during the construction boom (2005-2010) are running into this issue once their warranty is long expired.
It is best to frequently walk the outside perimeter of your home and inspect for cracks in the stucco as well as concrete block. If you believe you may have water or mold damage to your home as a result of stucco cracks please call SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621 to schedule an inspection. Remember when dealing with an issue like this, time is of the essence. A licensed professional will come to your home and inspect thru moisture detection and thermal imaging for damage that may not be visible to the human eye.
